Anyone using MrPostman app?
Anyone using MrPostman app?
am 24.11.2006 16:11:19 von incognito
Is anyone using MrPostman, the Java interface that reads web mail pages such
as Yahoo and Hotmail and inputs it into mail clients such as Eudora? I can
find no documentation, either that came with the installer or on the web site
.
I've installed the latest version (1.2.4) and it seems to be running (a user
interface is running), but the default ports are a mystery to me; I wouldn't
know if they were right or totally wrong. Also, how do I set Eudora's POP
server settings?
Basically, I'm in the dark. There's a forum on the web site. I posted a
question, but questions seem to be answered infrequently, so I'm hoping my
best chance is here.
It's on a Mac, but if you're using MrP on another platform, the general
set-up of ports and mail client settings probably transfer.
Help?
Thanks,
JE

I was under the impression that Yahoo didn't make pop mail available
with their free email service, only with their paid for access. I was
also under the impression that Hotmail only made pop available via
Outlook Express. I was also under the vague impression that Eudora for
Macintosh had reached end of life, at least under Qualcomm. That seems a
lot of unsupported agents to get around. If some or all these
impressions are correct, perhaps a different approach would be easier?
Maybe it would be worth considering moving to Gmail, which does claim to
support pop as well as web based access
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12103 and also lists
Eudora for Mac as a supported pop mail application

My original post says:
"...MrPostman, the Java interface that reads web mail pages such as Yahoo and
Hotmail and inputs it into mail clients such as Eudora..."
This means that you can access web-mail servers using POP mail clients.
That's MrPostman's raison d'ĂȘtre.
So I pose, once again: is anyone using MrP that can help me with
configuration questions?
Thanks,

I've found Gmail's POP access fine. Why bother with what is a large,
slow and cumbersome workaround when there are free alternatives like
Gmail?

I'm really reluctant to let Google have access to my email. What I put
or receive in my email is none of their business, and I'm not certain I
can trust them. I don't have anything to hide, but I still don't like
the idea.

I had never heard of MrPostman until I read your post, but I just
installed version 1.2.4 and got it to work fine with my Gmail account
and Apple's Mail.app (sorry, I'm not a Eudora user), but it won't accept
my Yahoo mail password.
Anyway, there's a help menu in the GUI, where I found all I needed to
set it up, and you can access the same info via a web browser at:
http://localhost:22220
I just used the POP3 port number (11110) that the app defaults to. In
Eudora, when you set up a new mail account, you'd specify that it's a
POP3 account and it uses port 11110. Now, how you'd specify that port
number in Eudora is something I can't help you with...

That's correct. However, MrPostman is a Java app that logs into a
webmail account and then makes your messages available to your mail
client via a POP3 account.

I was only testing it to help the OP and out of curiosity, and I only
went as far as determining that it works, so I can't say anything about
its speed. It doesn't grab headers at all, and I mean _any_ headers.
That's right, not even sender and subject. I don't see any reason to
use it with a Gmail account, but if I could only get it to accept my
Yahoo Mail password I would find some use for it.

Hmmm....
I would definitely feel the same way about Julian Haight and Ironport,
but I guess they tell you how they use your mail so maybe that's all
they do with it. Google hits that mark as well, and I don't see a
serious problem with what they claim to do.
The same pretty much goes for any mail provider.

You have to let *someone* have access to your mail. Unless you run your
own mail server, but even then your ISP can sniff it if they want to,
and anything you send or receive is probably being stored by the other
party's mail service.

To say nothing of all the hops in between that you know nothing about,
every one of which *could* be storing and sniffing your mail.
I'm not trying to make you paranoid. I'm only trying to get you to
realize that there is an awful lot more trusting that goes on with
Internet-based communication than you seem to realize, and that you
might as well get used to it.

For secure email you need to get the sender to encrypt using your
public key on their machine and then get the encrypted message
onto your machine before decrypting it with your private key. As
long as you can do that then it doesn't matter what email system
you are using.
Of course it might still be possible for others to know that you
received an email sent by the sender even though they can't determine
the content - unless they use something like mixmaster to route it
through a chain of anonymous remailers.

I know how to view full headers in Mail. That's how I know that
MrPostman doesn't include any at all. Of course, I knew immediately
from the lack of Subject and From entries that they weren't there.

It's not _his_ server, it's YOUR Mac. That's what "localhost" means.
You have to download and install MrPostman, then launch it, before that

In Eudora, you'd need to install the Esoteric Settings plugin then you
can specify the port in the Ports & Protocols pane.

I looked at that (even though I use Mail, I've kept a copy of Eudora
around), but unless I missed something, that doesn't let you assign port
numbers on a per account basis like you can with, say, Mail and
Entourage.

I don't see how GMail differs from any of the big webmail providers in
those areas. I know there was a bit of kerfuffle for about a week over a
particularly silly interpretation of their documentation that left (for
about a week) a hole open for serious privacy violations (that would
probably be criminal under ECPA anyway...) I suspect that a lot of
people only ever heard the alarmist screeching about the original loose
wording and never paid attention to the clarifying rewording.
> and I don't get any ads with Spamcop.
The Gmail ads are extremely unobtrusive. If you POP your mail, they
don't exist. Via the web interface, there's an increasingly invisible[0]
AdSense gutter on the right side when reading messages or looking at a
single message thread. I'm not sure how that compares to other freemail
providers, but they are all living on the business model of selling
eyeballs.
I am a bit detached from the question of which mail provider's handling
of mail is more disturbing, because it has been a dozen years since I've
had mail I care much about being delivered to a machine I could not
personally unplug and incinerate (or wipe the disks totally clean) on a
whim. Whether the mail feeds SenderBase and the SpamCop BL, or AdSense
that feeds back to the user interface, or whatever Yahoo or Hotmail does
is a bit like discussing whether tap water with Cryptosporidium, E.
Coli, or Lead is worse.
[0] Because so many websites now use AdSense, it has become a modern
form of marginalia/illumination. It's ignorable.

Yes, you can. It's just not obvious. You don't even need the Esoteric
Setings plugin if yuou don't mind using the x-eudora-setting interface.
See http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=160 and scroll down to

It seems to me that what makes gmail worse than, say, having your email
go through comcast or some other ISP, is that (I am willing to bet) most
gmail users also use Google for their searching and are logged in when
they do that searching. So, not only does Google have your email, but,
if they chose, they could link your email to your searches. That's an
*awful* lot of information to have about a person. At least if you do
your searches with Google (I never do my logged in) and have your email
with some other ISP, it is more difficult to link together your personal
information.

Thanks, Mike. I got it working, sort of. It will connect with Yahoo and
download only headers. There is no body to any of the messages.
I tried Bill Cole's suggestion of setting the Yahoo personality's mail server
port using the X-Eudora-settings interface. It succeeded in that I'm now
getting downloads from my account, albeit headers only.
Any ideas what I might try now?
Thanks again,

I also changed the POP SSL for the Yahoo personality to None. Don't know if
that was the culprit...
Any ideas what I might try now to get full messages downloaded?
Thanks again,

Considering the continued problems you are having and Mike reporting
that MrPostman doesn't grab headers at all, may want to look at an
alternative: FreePOPs .

Thanks, Frank. FreePops is installed and fully functional.
I was unaware that any of these HTTP mail interpreters even existed. Thanks
again for the help.
Enjoy,
