Compacting a mbox file?

Compacting a mbox file?

am 30.11.2006 15:06:43 von sergio.nunes

Hi,

Is there any way to compact a mbox file using the unix mail command? My
trash folder is taking up a lot of space. I know that this is possible
to achieve with mutt or thunderbird, but I don't have access to these
programs at this machine.

Thanks in advance for any tip,

What do you mean "trash folder"? what program were you using when the
trash folder was created? normally, mail deletes messages from the mbox
and does not create a "trash folder."

You likely used a different program that manages the data in the "trash
folder", You need to set that to empty the "trash folder" on exist if
such option exists. In the trash folder are there individual messages?
do you have pine or other email programs on the system?

Basically I'm using a system where I'm unable to install new software
and not even pine is available.

In the first place the messages where deleted using the mail command. I
deleted several thousand messages but the mbox size didn't changed. I
presume that deleted messages where being stored, not expunged.

Any suggestion on how to reduce the size of my mbox file?

Thanks!

my guess is that when you were done with your session, instead of
hitting q, you hit x to exit.

I do not believe there is such a thing as a "trash folder" with the mail
command.

Here is the man page for mail which might help you.

http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?mail

Are you using xmail by any chance??

Ultimate sanction would be

rm mbox

but that'll get rid of everything. If the UNIX system has procmail
installed then use its formail filter.

Do you have formail and procmail? I regulary remove old messages from my=
=20
mailboxes by writing the ones I want to keep to a new file and deleting=20
the old file. As it happens, it is messages older than 'n' days that I=20
discard but the principle is there.

There is also a password autoresponder but, unless this a very
old message, a "tuna" will swim right through. )

Do you have shell access? Can't you just gzip it?
