Would be nice to be able to build my own firewall...

Why is it the words 'sow's' and 'ears' spring to mind?

tell me.
English is my second language.

There are so many stories about what firewall A does and B does not,
about the merit of FW A above B, etc,
the teminology of about every commercial FW is proprietary:
"blocked", "stealth", you name it.
A lot of it is mumbo..
It's a jungle, in short.

McAfee is bloated these days (20 or 30 Mb I see in taskmanager !)
Zonealarm gives troubles with some programs
etc etc.etc.
A lot of the functionality hidden behind icons and pretty pictures and
terminology.
I can handle IPtables in Linux, but dont want to have an extra machine
powered on 24/7/52.

Something lean and mean in Windows woould be nice, with a minimum of
trust aspects and a maximum of knowing-whats-going-on.

Sorry - we have a saying that 'You can't make a silk purse out of a
sow's ear'!

I would never have guessed that English is your second language.
