Any Free Anti-Virus software?

Any Free Anti-Virus software?

am 20.12.2006 13:00:53 von Neil Jones

Hello,

I am currently using AVG Free Anti-Virus software on my Windows PC.
Starting January 2007, AVG is becoming Payware. Is there any other free
Anti-Virus software available?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Regards,

NJ

AVG is not becoming payware. They still offer a free version. Your
information is based on a Web rumor that is running around right now
and isn't true.

Another good free antivirus is Avast.

Look again, they have a 7.5 version which is still free.

Nope, there's a new free one from them. They do that ever year or so.

Just keep using AVG using the new free one.

How confusing is this for people?
Is the message AVG is presenting to the user that cryptic or - like most
things - users just click through it?

I mean no offense to you personally - I just find it humorous that so many
people have come to these newsgroups and posted that 'AVG is no longer
free...' unless something is just horribly wrong with the message and the
web page explanation on AVG's site (which would be the next place I would go
if I was told my free version would expire soon...)

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

"GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition.
This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with
the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free
7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with
the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free
7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007."

What I am curious about now is the exact wording - is it deceptive?

I've been using updated versions of Datafellows' F-PROT for DOS since
1996. No viruses for me yet, though it's uncovered several viruses on
other computers my family has used. Datafellows updates their
"signature" files every few weeks, and they fit on a floppy disk.

If AVAST is still available in some free version, I'd recommend that,
as well.

Terrence Briggs, shocked that people hate Win98SE so much. What are
they running? :)
Peace to you...

Yes, what the user sees on their PC isnt very clear at all,
nothing like as clear as the below. They appear to do it that
way hoping that plenty of the suckers wont look very hard
and will pay for their AVG instead of using the new free one.

They did that the last time too, so it must be deliberate.

Nope.

It would make more sense for them to say it as clearly on
what pops up on the user's PC. They choose not to do that.

Nope, just not presented as clearly as that in the
popup that shows up on the user's PC automatically.

Yes, it is that cryptic.

The dialog box pops up on screen, and tells you in big letters that the free
version of AVG that you are using will no longer be available for use after
January 2007. It does not state in big letters that there is a simple
version upgrade you can get for free, and the suggestion is left that you
had better buy the software.

It certainly fooled me, and I've been in this business for years.

Alun.

I don't see why this post was crossposted to so many groups, I have
removed what seemed superfluous.

As far as I know (and since I use the software myself, have for a long
time too, I should know...) F-Prot is not a product by Datafellows, but
is created and maintained by the Icelandic corporation Frisk Software
International.

See http://www.f-prot.com

Not sure where you get the idea it's made by Datafellows?

There are other good free suites out there thugh, for a native windows
one that is free, ClamAV is a good one afaik, and keeps their detection
rules very up-to-date. But there are more out there, just make sure you
get one that doesn't only -detect-, but can also remove the viruses. A
common trick of payware suites is to have a free scanner that will only
report an infection and then you actually have to buy the software's
full version to clean it as well. Read carefully.
