Why is our sub domain box getting email addressed to our top level domain?

Why is our sub domain box getting email addressed to our top level domain?

Our Message Board has an Internet Host name of msgboard.ourdomain.com
So we would only expect email such as the following to reach the box;
joeblow@msgboard.ourdomain.com. However, we are seeing mostly SPAM
email addressed to our TOP domain (e.g. joe@ourdomain.com) also
hitting our Message Board box.

So any ideas why our msgboard.ourdomain.com box is getting
ourdomain.com email?

Thanks

It might help to know the domain names. You can ROT-13 it to foil
casual harvesting.

Almost all of the contents of the spam messages is controlled by the spammer.
So believing any of these contents (e.g. the 'To:' header field) constitutes
believing something a spammer said.
(Although it does depend upon what precisely you mean by "addressed to".)
