Regarding Update the structure of table

Hi
My Problem is below
Actaually i have to change the structure of filed in the table and also
change some constraints on that fields.
I changed the field type and also the constarints in the mysql database
after changing the field structure when i execute the command desc
tablename then it shows the old description not the new one why it is so
i am using mysql sever 5.0 version
but one thing i have to say when i back up the table the it is showing
the modified structure.
