Is there a way to use wild cards with the host file? I want to use the host
file to prevent internet access by having the user automatically directed to
a specific internal ip address no matter what url he puts in.

If you are talking about the Windows LMHOSTS or unix /etc/hosts
then the answer is NO.
But in this newsgroup, you could be talking about any of 193
incredibly obscure host files, so the best we can answer is,
"Could you be more specific about the equipment and software
version?"

No, you cannot add wildcards to the Hosts File, as it blocks sites by
specific domain. However, you CAN use wildcards with a PAC file,
which can be used in cooperation with your Hosts file. For example,
on my system, I use the MVPS Hosts File and the BlockAdverts (merged
with MVPS). I then use eDexter which has a PAC file that can be
edited and wildcards added. If you look at the PAC file in Notepad,
it looks almost identical to the Adblock file (used with Firefox). It
is really effective and blocks almost all of the gargabe out there.
You can read about the eDexter program and download the program (very
small) at: http://www.pyrenean.com/edexter.php
I have used this combination for a long time and is a good way to have
all your bases covered.

You apparently were a neglected child and have an enormous inferiority
complex, thus feeling you have to make yourself feel worthy by putting
down any and every idea that is not your own. My advice, go to your

you call people names and degrade any idea that doesn't agree with
yours? As for the hosts file idea, if I am an idiot, so be it, as it
works like a charm. I have not had one bit of malware on my system
since I've been using that method. But, according to you (in theory),
that shouldn't happen. Also, if I am an idiot, at least I'm an idiot
honestly trying to help people solve their problems rather than trying
to prove how 'smart' I am in a sorry attempt to cover my own
shortcomings and complete lack of social skills. Wow - maybe some day
I can grow up and I, too, can be a complete a-hole all wrapped up in
myself with a complete disregard for others. One can only hope.
