mod_proxy deletes all but the last cookie on ProxyPass request
mod_proxy deletes all but the last cookie on ProxyPass request
am 25.03.2002 05:06:43 von Vincent Cunniffe
Hi,
I've run into a problem using mod_proxy to do passthroughs on a number of virtual
servers, whereby it seems to be losing all but the last cookie header.
The main apache server has several virtual hosts each of which passes through to a
more secure server (on the same machine), using a config for each domain :
ProxyPass / http://newdomain.hosted.domain.com/
ProxyPassReverse / http://newdomain.hosted.domain.com/
The code running on the secure server produces a number of cookies, and passes data
back to the client. The data received from a request direct to the secure server is :
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 03:39:26 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.24
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.1.2
Set-Cookie: atest1=1017027566; expires=Mon, 25-Mar-02 04:39:26 GMT
Set-Cookie: atest2=1017027566; expires=Mon, 25-Mar-02 04:39:26 GMT
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: text/html
2c
set
set atest1 ----
set atest2 ----
0
However, what the client actually receives from the front-end server after the
ProxyPass finishes is :
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 03:38:15 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.24
Content-Type: text/html
Set-Cookie: atest2=1017027495; expires=Mon, 25-Mar-02 04:38:15 GMT
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.1.2
X-Cache: MISS from tribes2.theladder.org
2c
set
set atest1 ----
set atest2 ----
0
Obviously, the previous Set-Cookie header has been removed. I've tested it with
many cookies, of different names, including 'name[1]' style ones, and in every
case all but the last cookie header are removed.
The only relevant data I've been able to track down online is :
http://archive.covalent.net/apache-bugdb/2000/05/0082.xml
which was suggested by a reader on one of the PHP lists. However, that patch was
superceded by another one, which on investigation turns out to be incorporated in
the currently shipping Apache code.
So, if anyone has any solutions or suggestions, I'd be very grateful.
The configuration on both apache instances is :
Apache 1.3.24
PHP 4.2
Compilation commands, http.conf, logs, etc. available upon request.
Regards,
Vincent

Aaaaargh! This stupid bug just won't die.
Will check this again and get back to you later today. It was supposed
to be fixed in v1.3.24, and was the main reason why I wanted the release
to go out. Grrrr!

Graham

I have just committed a fix to this that works for me - can you test and
get back to me the results of using the latest CVS head?

Normally I just grab the source tarball : what's the simplest method for getting
the relevant CVS source tree then?
I can test this immediately I get it.

Are daily source tarballs made available? If so - one of those should
work. Just make sure your source has a comment in src/CHANGES about the
fix, otherwise the fix is not there.

I can't find anything like a nightly on the main site, just the releases.
Can I check a tree out of the same CVS you use? If so, give me the details
and I'll grab it.

Apache won"t start with latest mod_proxy and 1.3.14 on Windows
am 06.05.2002 13:27:11 von Andrew Braund
The 1.3.25dev proxy code has been working well for me on windows, Hotmail works
fine and the other sites I previously had trouble with are all OK now.
I have noticed a new issue but it is probably just due to the particularly
weird setup that I have to run.
I tried the latest proxy code - cvs snapshot (apache-1.3_20020505221200.tar.gz)
ie compiled the lot then grabbed mod_proxy.so and dumped it onto my
server running 1.3.14 on Win95.
Now on start-up I get;
======================8<==========================================
C:\Program Files\Novato\ALLcNET>apache -d \allcnet
Syntax error on line 225 of /allcnet/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load C:/Program Files/Novato/ALLcNET/modules/mod_proxy.so into server: (3
1) A device attached to the system is not functioning:
Note the errors or messages above, and press the key to exit.
======================8<==========================================
Line 225 is;
LoadModule proxy_module "C:/Program Files/Novato/ALLcNET/modules/mod_proxy.so"
If I copy mod_proxy.so from 1.3.24 or 1.3.14 all is fine again.
The same also happens with Win2000, ie 1.3.14 and mod_proxy.so from cvs
snapshot today gives the same error message.
Any ideas on what might be happening?
I am in the process of going through the recent commits to try to work
out at what stage this started to happen.
The latest mod_proxy.so works fine with 1.3.25dev on Win95, its only when
I try to mix it with 1.3.14 that I have a problem.
The reason I use 1.3.14 on Win95 is that it is the latest version that does
not seem to have windows 9x shutdown issues :-(.
Regards
Andrew Braund

And the answer is... don't do that.
You cannot expect modules compiled against a recent release (1.3.25) to work with the
server at an earlier release (1.3.14). Even if it appears to work, it is a monumentally
bad idea. In this case, 1.3.25-dev mod_proxy requires a couple of new functions exported
from http_protocol.c that are not exported in earlier releases.
