newbie SMTP Virtual server questions
am 03.07.2007 22:24:01 von jason
I have a couple questions on the SMTP Virtual Server for IIS 6
1. can you have multiple STMP Virtual servers installed so that each web
site can have its own STMP server.
2. is there a way to make sure that the STMP Virtual server can only act as
a queuing agent and not act as an email server. If we have a requirement
that it can not accept incoming emailsâ¦can that be done?
thanks

Hi Jason,
SMTP issues are not covered by the managed MSDN newsgroups. The unmanaged
newsgroup of IIS SMTP is: microsoft.public.inetserver.iis.smtp_nntp . You
can post your questions there to see if there are any suggestion from
community.
According to the first question, sure, we can create multiple SMTP virtual
servers on single IIS. You can make them use different IP addresses.
Otherwise if the different virtual servers are distinguished with different
ports, the instances using non-default(not 25) ports generally willl not be
accepted by other SMTP server on the Internet.
For the second question, I assume you are looking for building up a
dedicated/private relay server. The relay setting can be configured in a
virtual server's property. You can set only the emails from which servers
or IP addresses are accepted to relay.
I hope the info will be of some help.
Have a good day.
Sincerely,
WenJun Zhang

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
