Multiple Websites Behind One IP Address

Multiple Websites Behind One IP Address

I'm going to be setting up a machine with WinSvr2K3EESP2 and would like to be
able to run multiple sites behind one IP address. Is this possible? If so,
how do I let the server know the difference between the multiple browser and
FTP requests?

Thanx.

You'll use host-headers for your websites. The FTP service in w2k3 does not
support 'host-headers' for FTP. I'd suggest you use FTP virtual
directories.

I'd create local users called 'domain1', an FTP virtual directory called
'domain1' that maps to domain1.com on disk, make sure the appropriate
permissions are setup.

Thank you, Steve.

I'll give her a go tonight and let you know how it all works out.

Here is an article a co-worker wrote that has some great direction on
dealing with FTP.

Something you need to be aware of, host headers don't work for secure web
sites - only the default web site can be pulled up when using https as the
host header info is encrypted. If you want all or some sites to have secure
access, you will have to stick each of these behind a separate IP.

Does having to have separate IP addresses mean I will need separate machines,
or can I simply assign multiple IP addresses to the same NIC and point the
sites to their respective IP?

You know...

- Start
- Control Panel
- Network Connections
- right click the ethernet adapter and choose properties
- double click the internet protocol (tcp/ip)
- click the advanced button
- click the add button under ip addresses
- add multiple ip addresses

Will that work?

Thanx.

No, you don't need separate machines, and you are correct about assigning
multiple IPs to the same NIC and point the sites to the appropriate IP.

So, in setting up the server with multiple IP addresses, would that solve the
issues with FTP and secure access to each site?

Thanx again.
