Do Windows CE devices connecting to IIS 6.0 need an individual CAL ?

Do Windows CE devices connecting to IIS 6.0 need an individual CAL ?

am 07.08.2007 00:30:05 von Nicolas Nasdrovisky

I have a project where +/- 100 Windows CE 5.0 devices will connect to a IIS
6.0 (on Windows 2003 Server) Web Service, through a RAS connection.
The server will have 100 virtual serial ports (every port will be configured
as a RAS entry point), and every Windows CE 5.0 device will connect through
RAS to access the Web Service. (the devices are not wi-fi, and we will use
their serial cradle to connect to port servers)

Do I have to purchase one CAL for every Windows CE 5.0 device ?

Thanks a lot.
Nicolas.

Hi,

I'm not sure why this is an IIS question - RAS connections would require
CALs right?

If you are talking about your web application, then if it's authenticated
access using Windows accounts, you need CALs. If it's anonymous access, then
you don't need CALs.

Cheers
Ken

Hi Nicolas,

Since this question is a licensing issue, and the MSDN newsgroup is focused
on technical issues, I feel our Microsoft Customer Service would be better
able to address this issue. You can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through
Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific time) to speak directly to a
Microsoft licensing specialist, and you can get more detailed information
from there. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft
Licensing Sites to find contact information in their locations.

For detailed information on contacting Microsoft Customer Service, please

Hi Nicolas,

For all licensing questions, i always recommend to contact Microsoft, so i
do so here as well.

But my first feeling in this situation is that you will need 1 CAL per
client, since they use resources on the server (RAS).

But since licensing is so important, please contact Microsoft directly to
get a definite answer.
