Hi folks,

I ftp'd into ibiblio, which is located at U North Carolina,
and it established several connections to Google as well.
I did this ftp using Firefox. What's going on here?

tcp 0 0 192.168.1.45:51246 od-in-f104.google.:http
ESTABLISHED
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.45:45578 yo-in-f104.google.:http
ESTABLISHED
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.45:38761 ibiblio.unc.edu:ftp
ESTABLISHED
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.45:46511 ibiblio.unc.edu:60599
ESTABLISHED

Thanks.

You have Google SafeBrowsing switched off, but it still does something? Then
you should repair your Firefox profile.

In your firefox, check for google safe browsing feature. I believe
that's making the connection.

Cheers

1. Why are you using a browser to ftp? ibiblio is a *nix box (actually
a cluster of Linux boxes), and it understands UNIX commands, such as
'ls -lrt' to sort a directory listing by date.

2. You've installed a google "helper" that is spyware. Fix that.

Browsers are designed to make the task of installing spyware easy.
Google _needs_ this spyware in order to "improve your Internet
Experience" by seeing exactly what you use your computer for, so they
can sell advertising better targeted at you. If that's not what you
want, then loose the browser, or at least limit it's use to it's
intended purpose of viewing web pages. (Even there, 'lynx' or 'elinks'
is a faster browser for most pages if the color of the crayon the page
author used is less important than the written information.).
