Creating a local domain name with Sharepoint

Hello,
I am trying a Sharepoint demo. I would like to create temporary
domain - not have to go out a pay to register one.
How can I create my own local domain name that can be called from IIS?
I was going to go the hosts file in C:\Windows\system32\driver\etc
- create a domain name i.e. www.sharepoint.com and point it to
127.0.0.1
will that work?
Will Sharepoint recognize it?
Am I on the right track at least?
Thanks,
Tmuld
