IIS6/UnableToAccessWebsite

IIS6/UnableToAccessWebsite

am 26.08.2007 18:35:24 von GH

I am setting up IIS 6 on Windows 2003 server R2 SP2. I can access my
website from behind the firewall, but when I try to access it from a
computer outside my firewall I get the message below. I can use remote
desktop from another location outside my firewall and get to the server
just fine. What am I missing or is there log I can view on the server
to see if the website is even getting the request?

TIA

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's
domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet
Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols
are enabled under the security section.

For offline users

You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
To view subscribed feeds

Click the Favorites Center button , click Feeds, and then click the feed
you want to view.

To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)

Click Tools , and then click Work Offline.
Click the Favorites Center button , click History, and then click the
page you want to view.

Do you use the IP address to access the website from outside? Have you
opened port 80 in your firewall? Does your ISP block port 80?

I have a LinkSys router that I forward the public ip to the private ip.
Yes 80 is opened and I use the same ISP as my other dsl line is on and
80 is opened. My other DSL has a Windows 2003 SBS behind it and
everything is cloned as far as routers go. It has worked for several
years now without a problem.

Thanks

The error message tells you that Internet Explorer cannot find the
webserver, so i am quite sure that IIS never got a request. But you can
always check the IIS log file located in C:\Windows\System32\logfiles\W3C...

I think you have a networking problem, because IIS seems to be working
fine. If you have forwarded the public IP to the private IP, it means that
all request, no matter if it is coming from the inside or the outside, go
to the same IP address. So it cannot be a setting in IIS if it works from
inside the firewall. The problem seems to be that the outside request
never gets to the webserver.

Look in %windir%\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC#\*.log

If it does not show an entry for your outside request but shows a
request for your internal request, then you have a network routing
problem.

Check:
1. firewall configuration to make sure the HTTP port is open
2. router configuration to make sure external traffic is forwarded
internally
3. Your ISP allows access to port 80 for any of its IP addresses

It doesn't matter if you clone settings, use the same type of router,
or use the same ISP. Verify all pieces of information specifically for
each instance whenever you troubleshoot.

Your issue is not with any missing configuration of IIS6 because it
works behind the firewall.

David:

I am not using routing and remote access on the server I am having
problems with. Do I have to have this setup in order to get the
public\private ip mappings working. I thought as long as my external
router was using port forwarding this, I would not need routing and
remote access.

TIA

No, you don't need Routing and Remote Access for this scenario to
work. It all works with default configuration and simple configuration
-- I'm looking at my server right now.

Your description of your issue suggests that the problem is not with
IIS/Windows configuration but rather with how your networking/routing
is setup.
