Problem with IIS 5.1 running on XP professioal
Problem with IIS 5.1 running on XP professioal
am 17.09.2007 19:56:02 von Jim
Hi All,
Have had no problems running PWS under Win98 or running IIS under Win 2000
pro. However, having installed IIS 5.1 under XP pro I find I am unable to get
any pages to display. All that is returned is error http 500 (internal server
error) or error http 403 (forbidden) which indicates that Internet Explorer
(IE7) was able to connect to the website, but does not have permission to
view the webpage. Can get directory listings but that is all.
After re-installing and experiencing the same problems have played with all
the settings that appear relevant but to no avail. Sure I must be missing
something obvious.
Any suggestions
Regards
Jim

as for 403. what's the full error msgs?

Hi Bernard,
Thanks for the interest.
I have no entries in the event viewer under internet Explorer but two come
up each time under Security.
The first is :-
Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: Security
Event Category: Account Logon
Event ID: 680
Date: 18/09/2007
Time: 13:58:37
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: GRIMJIM
Description:
Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Logon account: IWAM_GRIMJIM
Source Workstation: GRIMJIM
Error Code: 0xC000006A
and the second :-
Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: Security
Event Category: Logon/Logoff
Event ID: 529
Date: 18/09/2007
Time: 13:58:37
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: GRIMJIM
Description:
Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: IWAM_GRIMJIM
Domain: GRIMJIM
Logon Type: 4
Logon Process: DCOMSCM
Authentication Package: Negotiate
Workstation Name: GRIMJIM
This would seem to me to be a password issue. However, as I use this
computer basically as a standalone machine I have not set up any passwords.
Can this be the root of the issue with XP. Never had problems with Win2000 or
Win98.
Await advice with interest.
Regards
Jim

what page you try go access? have you try a simple hello.asp or hello.htm ?
For 500 error, disable IE friendly error msgs
HOW TO: Troubleshoot an "HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error" Error Message
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=311766
do you see more meaningful error msgs.
next, nothing in application or system event log.
the security event log is saying iwan account password issue, if it does i'm
sure you will get another entry in app/system event log as well.

Jim,
If you're still having this problem, seems its related to unsynch pwd of
IWAM account.
Check this to see if it helps.

Hi
Sorry, seems posting went wrong.
Had come across this KB and followed guidance by changing both the IUSR and
IWAM passwords to that contained within the IIS metabase. Unfortunately this
did not resolve the problem.
I still get the http 500 error message when trying to browse any existing
..asp page no matter how basic. The general message is:-
Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the
processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail
information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance.
Up to now the event log has only shown entries in the Security section being
type Failure Audit as detailed in a previous posting. This appears to apply
to IWAM only as IUSR is successful.
However, I have just tried again and one warning and one error have appeared
in the system section.
The warning is:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36
Date: 26/09/2007
Time: 23:42:36
User: N/A
Computer: GRIMJIM
Description:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/IISHELP'. The error
was 'The server process could not be started because the configured identity
is incorrect. Check the username and password.
'.

Microsoft Online Support site located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

and the error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10004
Date: 26/09/2007
Time: 23:42:36
User: N/A
Computer: GRIMJIM
Description:
DCOM got error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " and was
unable to logon .\IWAM_GRIMJIM in order to run the server:
{3D14228D-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1}
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I am going to try changing the password for IWAM once again in case I read
or typed it wrong.
In the meantime, any further comments or advice.
Regards
Jim

Hi,
I am resyncing as follows (as laid out in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297989 ):
cscript.exe synciwam.vbs -v
I get the following response:
Microsoft Windows Script Host Version 5.6
Copyright Microsoft Corporation 1996-2001. All rights reserved.
IIS Applications Defined:
Name, AppIsolated, Package ID
ROOT, 2
IISHelp, 2,
Out of process applications defined:

{3D14228D-FBE1-11d0-995D-00C04FD919C1}
Error: 1AD: ActiveX component can't create object
Not sure what this means.
No problems with resetting IIS. Stops and starts OK.

Hi,
Followed all KB guidance but to no avail.
Reinstalled component services as per KB 301919. Have established (following
KB 309051) that when setting application protection for the web site to low

Mmm... first make sure you can always expand the com+ catalog.
so per the first kb, you can expand component services node already?
then in the other kb step 3. if you put iwam user to administrator group,
does it load the asp
in medium or high? if yes this is permission isue. try the step 3 KBs on
resync and etc.
then you can jump to step 5 to reregister all components.
then remove iwam from admin group, browse again if same error, try step 4 to
use filemon to trace the access issue.

This is where I need to take the issue stage by stage.
I have followed the instructions in KB 301919 and reinstalled component
services.
When I open the Compopnent Services MMC and click to expand Component
Services and then Computers and then My Computer I get the following 3 nodes:
COM+ Applications
DCOM Config
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
When I try to expand the COM+ Applications node I still get the following
error message:
An error message occurred while processing the last operation
Error code 80080005 - Server execution failed
The event log may contain additional troubleshooting information
In the application event log I get the following error message:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: COM+
Event Category: Unknown
Event ID: 4689
Date: 08/10/2007
Time: 13:18:51
User: N/A
Computer: GRIMJIM
Description:
The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal
state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that could be
caused by the custom components running in the COM+ application, the
components they make use of, or other factors. Error in
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\comsvcs\txprop\dtcinfo.cpp(158), hr = 8000ffff:
TransactionManager->GetWhereaboutsSize
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Until I can resolve this presumably I can't proceed to the next KB.
However,

No - asp does not load. I get the following error:
Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the
processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail
information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance.
In the System Event I get a warning:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36
Date: 08/10/2007
Time: 13:32:07
User: N/A
Computer: GRIMJIM
Description:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/IISHELP'. The error
was 'No such interface supported
'.

With regard to step 5 the NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users and NT
AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE entries are present in the Users group.
Wondering if a complete reinstall of the OS and Applications might be the
only answer.
