Mac to PC?

I have an old Macintosh LC II with Claris Filemaker Pro v1.0. I would like
to junk the Mac as it is totally obsolete but I need to keep one library
file. Can I in some way open it on my PC or convert it to another program?
Appreciate any help and apologize if this is inappropriate for this group.

Windows didn't get Filemaker until Ver2. On Mac you need to get it to
a version that a PC version can read. In v1.0 can you export to csv
or tab-delimited which can be opened in something more modern.

Thank you TK for the reply, you helped clarify my problem. My Mac HD is too
limited to except any new program. I have cleaned out everything except for
Filemaker and it still runs slow. I suppose I could clean out the HD and
re-install everything but I would also need a copy of Excel or something. I
only have floppy disk capability on this old Mac. I guess I'm stuck, as I
need to copy the file to floppy and first move it to PC before converting.
Looks like this can't be done? This might be a job for a pro.

I don't follow. Why exactly can't you export the file to CSV from
Filemaker Pro v1 on the mac to a blank floppy? Is the export file too
big to fit on a floppy?
And if it is, then the filemaker file is surely too big to fit on a
floppy too; and if so then how are you planning on transferring it to
a PC?

Sorry that I confused you I hope this will explain it. I never used CSV
before so my problem lies in not clearly understanding the procedure. I have
copied the file to a Mac floppy. But that floppy will not open on my PC. As
I understand it, to export to CSV I will need a program such as Excel. Does
that mean a PC with Excel will open that Mac file and convert it to a PC
document? If I understand CSV correctly it will convert between programs
such as from Filemaker Pro into Excel or vice versa. What I do not
understand is how to open a Macintosh floppy on a PC.

No, you don't need Excel on the Mac. You use the Export option in
FileMaker to create the CSV file, choosing the appropirate fields and
field order you want.

A CSV file is simply a normal text document that doesn't care what
computer type or what application you're using (within reason) - you
can open it in Word, Excel, etc. or import it into an Access database
that you've already created. Excel is usually the best choice since it
automagically splits the fields into separate columkns and records into
separate rows.

Windows PCs can not read Macintosh floppy disks (unless you buy extra
software), but Macintoshes can read and write Windows PC disks.
Depending on what version of the Mac operating system you're using, you
may be able to simply put the floppy disk into the Mac, click on it and
choose Format or Erase Disk from the Special menu. You'll then get a
choice of formats, one of which is PC floppy.
If the Mac is still using a now ancient version of the operating
system, then you may not be able to do that without an extra piece of
Mac software that will allow you to use Windows PC disks (this software
may be difficult to find now and near impossible to install if the Mac
can't be connected to the Internet to download it).
If the Mac is able to be connected to the Internet, then it might be
easier to simply email the file to yourself and then collect the email
on the Windows PC.

Ah-so, very Helpful Harry. A big thank you, I think I can do that!

I would suggest exporting to a Merge file. This is a CSV file that
includes field names. it is very helpful to have the field names when
you go to use the data. FileMaker has the ability to export to a Merge
file.
Excel, Filemaker and other programs can handle a Merge file just fine.
Excel treats it as CSV, and treats the first row as field names.

There is of course one thing to note, none of FileMaker's export
formats will retain carriage returns within text field data. It
automatically gets replaced since the return character is used to
separate records in the exported file.
If exporting to a Tab delimted text file, the tabs within text field
data are also replaced.
