hosting 2 websites using 2 ip addresses on the same physical serve

hosting 2 websites using 2 ip addresses on the same physical serve

am 21.09.2007 02:40:28 von Tanya

Hi all,

I have been searching online but can't get a grip on this. It is my first
time implementing this project and I'm stuck.

Basically, I would like to know
(1) how to config IIS 5 on Windows 2000 Server to support hosting 2 websites
using 2 different IP addresses.
(2) I look at the IIS consule -> Web Site Identification to see the current
website configuration. I found that the IP Address is "(All Unassigned)" on
TCP Port 80. Do I have to modify the IP address of the first website?
(3) how the server/IIS can differentiate if a request is from which ip
address/website?

Below is my situation:

The Windows 2000 server has 2 NIC cards: LAN and Internet. My understanding
is I don't need to modify setting on LAN card, but I'm not sure if I should
assign another static local IP address (to support a new website) to the
Internet NIC card.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Tonya, I have about 15 domains. All are "All Unassigned" on TCP Port
80. I also have 2 NIC's. 1 NIC is for remote administration & SSL and the
other NIC is strickly for port 80.

I also setup at least 2 host headers for each domain. Example:
www.mydomain.com & mydomain.com

This way it doesn't matter if the end user type the www or not.

Hope this helps.

In reference to your question # 3, setup each website as a new website and
use your host headers.

Hi Mark, Thanks for advice.

So each domain of yours shares the same IP address?

So I don't need to create another "local" static IP address on my internet
NIC card and assign it on the second website folder in the IIS right? The IIS
will just use "host headers" to identify? What if someone enters an IP
address for the first & second website, how does IIS know that it should call
the scripts for the second website?

Please advise..and thanks again for any thoughts..

If IP it uses and all sites are bind to unique host header, then you will
get 'no website configure for this address' error msgs. if you want 1 site
to bind to specific IP, then just set it at its TCPIP property.

It will serve up the default web site.

What I do for that is have an index.html page on the default web site
explaining that the user needs to use the name of the web site rather than
the IP address, and then a list of links to the web sites.

Re: hosting 2 websites using 2 ip addresses on the same physical s

Basic Instructions:

1. Open IIS
2. Right Click on Web Sites Tab
3. Select New Web Site
4. Follow Wizard, when you get the the IP Address and Port Settings Tab,
WE normally leave OUR setting to All Unassigned (Why? Since we support 4
Schools and 11 other Non-Profit Organizations, we don't want IP to bind -
may need to change IP in future - that's another story). The Router controls
which IP Address/port is open to Port 80.

If you ping or try to access the site via IP Address, then like Andrew
stated, you will get the default website. If you bind 2 or more sites to
different IP addresses, you'll have to configure the router for each IP
address.

5. Finish Wizard, right click on your web site and click properties.
6. (Option) On Web Site tab click the advance button. In your Host Header
Section WE have only two Host Headers per Web Site. (Example:
www.yousite.com & yousite.com) Why? So it doesn't matter if the end user
type www or not.

7. Go through your other tabs and make modifications where needed.

8. For your next site, go back to step 2 and proceed.

PLEASE NOTE: On your Paths, bury the joker and set permissions. Example:
E:\Websites\Upload\YourSite

Set permissions on YourSite to the lowest possible needed settings and
upload files to YourSite. If a bad file comes on your server then you'll
have all the permission you need to get rid of it (of course having virus
protection in place).

Thanks all for your advice and time.

Since my network engineer has not configured the firewall to support a new
ip address, I'm testing the new website on the server (Intranet testing) and
not going anywhere.

Mark: I followed the steps you advised and the website is still not running.

Below are the configurations:
1. the first website (using ASP) has its local path at c:\first
-->and will call first.asp
--> do not have a host header assigned.
2. the second website (using PHP) has its local path at c:\second
-->and will call second.php
-->has a host header set to second.com & www.second.com

Both website have
-->IP address set to "All Unassigned" and port 80.
-->Excecute permissions: script only
-->Application Protection: Low (IIS Process)

When I called localhost, the server returned the default webpage of the
first website (http://localhost/first.asp). How do I get the server to call
the default webpage of the second website (second.php) running?

Please suggest.. Thanks in advace.

Edit your TCP hosts file to have a mapping of www.second.com to IP of
the web server. This basically mirrors what you'll have the network
engineer do when you finally register DNS entries to route traffic to
your web server -- but it only applies on this server.

When you do this --
http://localhost/first.asp goes to the first site
http://www.second.com/second.php goes to the second site.

Hi,

I tried several possibilities of mapping and got the error of "Cannot fine
server or DNS Error". And now my current TCP hosts file is
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.first.com (current IP address on the NIC card: 192.168.1.2)
127.0.0.1 www.second.com -- and before i added this line, i also added
another IP address (192.168.1.3) to on the NIC card.

Am I missing something here?

Are you sure that your networking is actually configured to use the
HOSTS file.

For example, if you have IE setup to automatically detect networking
and you have ISA setup, it will use ISA and bypass your HOSTS file
changes. You can turn that off by changing IE to not automatically
detect networking, in its Tools\Internet Options\Connections\Lan
Settings tab.

FYI: Your questions are really at the networking level now, and only
because you are working around what your networking guy is not doing
for you.

If this doesn't work, then I'd rather have you have your networking
guy directly support your needs, instead of anyone else supporting you
to go around him.
