backup pop3 account, partial clean up

backup pop3 account, partial clean up

am 26.09.2007 16:09:11 von chris_h_henderson

Hello!
I am using a pop3 account. I access this account from different
computers with Evolution, kmail or similar programs. Therefore I
always chose the option "Leave messages on server".

Now the storage limit on the server is reached. I'd like to move all
emails from earlier than January 2007 to my local computer for backup
and then remove those emails from the server.

How do I remove certain emails from the server, selected automatically
by date?

(If this is impossible, I could get all emails from the server by
disabling "Leave messages on server". Then I could locally chose the
recent emails, which I still want to have on the pop3 server. These
recent emails need to be uploaded back again to the pop3 server. Is
this possible?)

Chris

This is a MIME GnuPG-signed message. If you see this text, it means that
your E-mail or Usenet software does not support MIME signed messages.
The Internet standard for MIME PGP messages, RFC 2015, was published in 1996.
To open this message correctly you will need to install E-mail or Usenet
software that supports modern Internet standards.

Check the documentation of whatever mail software that you're using. The
POP3 server is not going to do anything on its own. It will delete whatever
messages the POP3 mail client tells it to delete, therefore you will need to
check the documentation of whatever mail software you use.

It is certainly possible. Your mail software has to tell the server which
messages to delete, and it will be done.

Some clients remove the messages from the server when you delete them in
your client. If this is the case you could download the messages you
want to backup and save them to disk. After that you just delete the
messages in your client and they will be removed from the server.

If you can access the pop3 account through imap you could also try to
use a program like imapsize (which can do more than just report size).
