PHP Jobs without degree? Do you know anywhere I can get them? [NOT SPAM]

am 27.09.2007 01:52:47 von ragearc

I am an expert PHP developer (At least I consider myself one, seeing
that I have done several projects as a freelancer and have made
several big projects of my own), with 3 years of experience in PHP /
MySQL, XHTML / CSS and XML, and I would like to work on a PHP job that
didn't require me to have a degree. I wanted this because freelancing
is very unstable and I am always desperate to find out if I get a
project or not, and that is very bad for me. If you know of any place
where I can look / apply for jobs that don't want any B.S. in computer
sciences, or any other degree. I am very flexible with locations and
would live anywhere where I was needed to work in.

Thanks in advance.

Well... A quick google 'enschede php programmeur' told me:
http://www.trimm.nl/ts/trimm.php?content=3D43014
http://jobsearch.nobiles.monsterboard.nl/getjob.asp?JobID=3D 60698731&AVS=

And that's just the ones I found in about 10 seconds...

Yep I also searched as soon as I posted here. Turns out the site I was
expecting more from, disappointed me. Last ZEND jobs submitted date
from 2006. xD

Well zend has a page where people can submit jobs and look for jobs.
apparently it was a failure, and my firfox is killing me with all this
lag!!!

A degree is not a prerequisite here in the UK but it does help.

Mostly I would say that the major factor is being able to proove your
skills, such as by having a protfolio to show them.

Then there are always the 'professional' qualifications as opposed to
'academic' qualifications, such as the ZCE and the CMDEV (MySQL
certified developer) that could be considered more relevant to the
position.

Paul

Ah, just as much a failure as the ZEND certificate I'd imagine.

That's a new one for me. Zend Certificate was a failure? Why do you
say so?

1. It costs the developer money.
2. I've never met an employer/contractor in my life that either knew or
cared about it.
3. Aside from that the level of competance needed to acquire the the
certificate is terribly low.

Oh thank you very much for that I thought that it was something like a
degree... I mean, Certified Engineer? Thanks for sparing me the
money ;).

Rik,

I would love to live in Enchede - I LOVE the Netherlands. But I'm not
good with languages (including English :-) ).

A degree isn't necessarily a prerequisite here in the U.S., either -
although it helps. The prospective employer would be stupid to turn
away someone with several years of experience for a college graduate in
Philosophy.

Unfortunately, larger companies run their requirement through HR
departments, who have no clue.

Yep, that's what bothers me. When I go to search jobs I see: BS in
computer sciences. I don't have BS or any other degree on anything,
and I'm still great in PHP. Moreover, I don't really think Computer
Sciences would help you in any way with PHP more than a Zend
Certificate...

I don't have a degree and it's never stopped me from getting a job. But
then a CS degree from the early 70's wouldn't be worth much today,
anyway. Back then it was pretty much all Fortran Cobol or Assembler.
Punch cards and printers. No relational databases, no graphics...

Best is to network. If you get the right people interested in you, they
will get around the HR boondoggle to hire you.

I haven't gotten a job from an ad in well over 30 years.

Try getting a job in government or academia without one.

The Chief Engineer on my ship in the Navy had a degree in dance, for God's
sake.
That's what qualified him as a command officer, rather than a deck-ape.
A dance degree.

Well, with a dance degree he might well be a lot tougher to hit in
combat... Rule number one of guerilla warfare is to kill the officers
first, so that should be made as though as possible. I do get a lot of 'in
the navy/village people' associations though...

Why the 'Engineer' part totally escapes me though.

Nothing wrong with that. In the meantime, you're building up a

I've done it as a consultant. Taught for Washington State University,
for instance. And in the government, the IRS and NSA (those were
interesting :-).

And even gotten a couple of Project Management contracts with the Feds.

It can be done if you have the experience and know who makes the decisions.

Only if you like being up to your neck in office politics, surrounded by
people who either are incompetent in what they do, or don't care if they
do the work or not. They know it's almost impossible to fire them.

It's why I don't actively seek government work.

LOL Yes I know that but nevertheless it would be awesome to be working
