PHP Editor/IDE
am 08.10.2007 18:40:22 von Jeff Gaines
I am very, very new to PHP. I have managed to get 'Hello World' and
phpinfo to run (XP Pro, Apache, php 5) but I would appreciate the ability
to debug my way through a script.
I have down-loaded NuSphere-phped-5.0.1evl-Win32.exe and
php_editor_php5.exe and I am pretty confused as they seem to be (almost)
the same thing. They seem to be a bit unhappy that my development machine
is the same as the server and confused that I am using php_dbg.dll-5.2.x.
Any recommendations as to what I should try? I am a home user so don't
want to spend a fortune but I am used to working in the comfort zone of
MSFT Visual Studio.

yet another weekly installment of 'what php editor/ide is best'.
you may be very, very new to php. we expect that you are at least an amature
at using the search feature of either your nntp reader or google. please use
it before posting any question. you'll most often find your question has
been asked and answered a multitude over.

Zend Studio.
Zend did a lot of the work on developing PHP and is the best established PHP
company out there.
It's got a free evaluation for like a month, and then costs $100 - $200 for
the "enterprise" version.
The cash allows you to call their help-line as much as you want, with even
the dumbest questions.
One of the features you'll probably like best is the fact that it has a
setting that allows you to sort-of emulate the VS.Net environment.
So all your keyboard shortcuts and stuff will work the same.
Here are some product reviews I wrote about it:

Many thanks Sanders, you're not wrong :-)
I think it must be the only one I hadn't down-loaded to try, their web
site is pretty slow and that doesn't give a good impression to a newcomer.
I found phpEdit odd because there seem to be 2 versions of the same thing
and phpDesigner doesn't seem to allow you to step through code. Komodo
wasn't bad but in reality the output in its output windows is different
from what you see in a browser.
Anyway Zend installed quickly and easily and worked immediately, just like
your review said it would :-)
Thanks again, I will give it a good try and might buy it for myself as a
belated birthday present :-)

Dear Jeff,
I have been working with an adapted version of the Eclipse IDE and I
am very confident with that solution. The package can be downloaded
for free at http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/
As you mentioned you already work with MS IDE, so you might like this
approach.

I just got a *very* interesting email from Zend.
They're transitioning away from a stand-alone product.
It's going to be just another plug-in for Eclipse.
That SUCKS because I love my stand-alone, run-anywhere Zend Studio.
It also sucks because my 1-year support period ended a year ago - so I don't
get the free upgrade.
It also sucks because in my Flash-Drive that I take to jobs, I'll have to
carry Zend AND Eclipse setups.
Of course, becoming familiar with the Eclipse IDE won't suck - so that's
something.
(Sorry for the HTML posting!)

That is a pity, I was just getting used to it.
I am also trying the Jcx VS.PHP add on for Visual Studio. Having problems
connecting to my server though. looks like I need to discover how to
install SSH/FTP on Windows :-(
PS - I hope the announcement from Zend doesn't mean you have to give back
your click pennies!

Too bad. They probably couldn't sell enough of them. But at the price
they were charging, I can understand why. It's a great product - but
expensive compared to what else is out there.

I'd be FAR more interested in Zend creating a plug-in for VS.Net than for
Eclipse.

Considering that I spent like $1k on Visual Studio.net, $99 seemed just
about right to me.
I even popped for the $200 Enterprise version, so that I could learn about
the extras, as well.

That's fine. I found it worked ok, but just wasn't worth the price.
