Sendmail I/O Error
am 08.10.2007 22:27:47 von kb
We recently switched our email server to a new circuit and router.
Ever since the switch, we've been getting the following errors at
random intervals:
Oct 8 01:46:05 teradactyl sendmail[1244]: l989bW6J001244:
SYSERR(root): collect: I/O error on connection from outbound.yyyy.net,
from=
Oct 8 01:47:10 teradactyl sendmail[1245]: l989cc6B001245:
SYSERR(root): collect: I/O error on connection from outbound.yyyy.net,
from=
Oct 8 01:48:23 teradactyl sendmail[1246]: l989dowv001246:
SYSERR(root): collect: I/O error on connection from outbound.yyyy.net,
from=
Every resource I've seen on this problem suggests lowering the MTU
size at the router. I've tried many different MTU sizes from 1300
to1450. No change. The new router is a Cisco 1800, and we haven't
noticed any other issues with it. Any suggestions?

You probably need to look at packet traces (e.g. from snoop, tcpdump,
ethereal, or whatever your favorite sniffing tool is) to see exactly
what is happening. The 'I/O error on connection' message and association
with new networking facilities both point at something wrong that you
probably can't get Sendmail itself to describe well, as Sendmail is
probably only seeing a failed i/o call on the relevant socket and a
rather general error number.
