MySQL cardinality

I'm getting a Cardinality of 1 on all FULLTEXT indexes I create even
though I know there are hundreds of unique values. An explain is also
returning only 1 row which should be many many more as well.
Is this normal, and why might it be happening?

UKuser, this is a php group, not a sql or mysql group.
