IIS log codes: Where do I look up sc-win32-status codes?

My concern is the sc-win32-status code of 2 for the last two entries.

Where do I look up this code?

404 0 2 is a real bonafide "file not found"

Since /test/WebResource.axd truly does not exist and requires an .axd
ScriptMap to ASPNET_ISAPI.DLL in IIS and corresponding
in ASP.Net to function, it tells me that you do not have ASP.Net
installed correctly on this machine.

Thank you for responding, David.

Actually, it turned out to be a SiteMinder issue. I had to uncheck "Verify
that file exists" for the "Wildcard application map" for SiteMinder (Website
Properties->Home Directory tab->Configuration). Once I made the change, my
browser started receiving webResource.axd.

Actually, you needed to describe more of your server's configuration
for one to correctly troubleshoot. Based on information you provided
me (just log entries), my conclusion is the correct one.

Of course, if you then said "ASP.Net is working correctly because .axd
ScriptMap and httpHandler exists", then I would chase down custom-
installed ISAPI Extensions as Wildcard Application mappings which
either generate the 404 themselves or configured with "check if file
exists".

For almost all Wildcard Application Mappings, having "check if file
exists" enabled is incorrect because it causes IIS to do a universal
file-existence check that may not be present when it is eventually
handled by its designated application mapping.

In other words, at every URL scope, if you have ONE Application
Mapping without "check if file exists", then you CANNOT have Wildcard
Application Mapping with "check if file exists".

Re: IIS log codes: Where do I look up sc-win32-status codes?

am 15.10.2007 21:58:02 von Ashwin

Nice try!

But, actually there was no reason for me to provide any further detail
considering my question was "Where do I look up sc-win32-status codes?”. I
provided enough information to answer my question. If you don’t take the
time to understand the question, don’t blame me.

I think a logical person tries to understand the problem and not just the
symptom(s), before offering a solution.

If you had not ass+u+me+d your understanding of the problem, you would have
received the information required to debug the problem.

Ah, my mistake for assuming you are like most other people who just
want answers to symptoms, not understand the problem and solving it
fundamentally. If you'd read my blog, you can tell what angle I come
from.

It is never clear from a person's question whether they actually care
to understand the problem or not.

In any case, I've given you the fundamental rationale for what is
going on. The answer is not merely "it's a SiteMinder issue" -- that
would be an incorrect assumption/conclusion on your part.

I have to clear that assumption up because you never know who searches
for these threads in the future and then incorrect ASSUME that
SiteMinder (or whatever else they have installed on their server) is
the problem, does something else that is bad, and then come asking for
help again... except you won't be here but I will still see the
fallout from your statements.
