I'm glad you got that message. Something's kafluey at this end; all of a
sudden this POS won't reply. I ~think~ it's the server, but who knows? I
can post a new message easy enough - which is what it did 2 back, using the
re: as the subject, but when I try to reply directly, it goes into "waiting
for conformation" mode and dies (Xnews). I even cleared all the headers
and reloaded them new, but same thing. The server is UsenetMonster, and I
notice a lot of time it doubles other's posts for some reason (ie: lists
them twice.)

To start looking for where the issue is, try another server. Try
http://aioe.org -- free, no signup necessary, no auth. Good for
testing. Servers: news.aioe.org and nntp.aioe.org

Okay, here we go with a BIG reply. I'm on news.aioe.org. Seems to be
pretty good - esp. for free.

Yep, it worked, and I tried sending virtually the same reply with old
server and it _didn't_ work. Thanks mucho whalo for the links. Where do
you come up with this stuff? I've never seen a free news server and about
3-4 months ago I was lookin' hard.

Question: why am I paying $2.95/mo for a newsserver that works dubiously
at best?

Now that the fire's out and you can post, let me add:

A better choice, in my opinion is news.motzarella.org. I do a lot of
Usenet, and I've seen evidence that aioe is kind of up-and-down. Also,
some servers block it; I don't know if it's spammy or kooky, but
remember, it *is* a no-registration-no-authorization server, so make of
that what you will. Motzarella requires reg/auth (FREE), but now that
you're back on Usenet you can wait a few hours or a day for that.
Summary: suggest you get motzarella.org going and when it's set up move
there.

Glad to see you back; glad I could be of assistance.

Oink!

Incidentally, I have seven or so news servers set up (and I use them, to
various degrees, just to make sure my regisrations don't die for lack of
logging in for x months). One reason is to see what's out there, and one
reason is so that even though my primary server is rock solid I know shit
happens, and I don't ever want to be in the situation you found yourself
in tonight. My primary is news.individual.net, but I'm posting this from
motzarella.org. Point: it's always good to have more than one route you
can take to your destination; roadblock do sometimes happen.

Agree 100%, and tomorrow I'll check into Motzarella as you recommend.
Right now I'm just a little too exasperated to be cool and calm like my

See another post (the one I tagged as a piggyback to another of my posts
in one of the Crap threads. I sent that from motzarella.org; this
is from aioe.org. :)

I dunno. :)

My primary, news.individual.net is a pay account, but it's US$14 a *year*.

It doesn't have binaries, but that's okay with me. Other than that it's
full-service. And has very responsive support -- I've reported a couple
newsgroup floods and seen an email reply and new filters kicking in within
minutes, for example.

No reason to remain exasperated; the fire's out, the issue's over. :)

I'm posting this from Comcast, and I don't even have an account there. :)

Second that. I have been with them for a month only and I am most

I'm on motzarella now and this is my first post but so far things seem
"hunky". Will check it (this post) and then try doin' a little normal n-
groupin'.

I tried individual.net once but there was an additional percentage added to
the costs for cc usage (for me at least in the USA) which wasn't mentioned
up front, so I abandoned it.

I think you, I, and someone else had a discussion about that then. I was,
and the only reason it didn't "go through" is because I failed to provide
the requested verification.

Anyway, as long as there's free stuff available, why pay? I'm nothing if
not cheap.

My pleasure!

Note, John, that my recommendation of aioe.org was because it was the
quickest way to get him a working connection because it requires no
registration. Once he was up, there, I steered him to
http://news.motzarella.org, which takes a bit longer becuase it
requires (free, noninvasive) registration, but which from what I've
read in various groups focused on Usenet itself and servers in
particular motzarella is more solid than aioe.

I am posting from news.cablerocket.com. I had an account with the cable
company they are affiliated with a year ago in a different state. They're
pretty decent.

Is there a cost involved or is it a free service?

1. Never heard of them before -- Cablerocket is an ISP.

2. This post is via that server. No registration; no authorization;
no cost -- these things are probably not intentional, and eventually they
might wake up. :)
