sendmail Smart relay config ignored

We are running Sendmail Version 8.11.6+Sun on an old server running
Solaris 8 and I am trying to change the Smart relay. I have made the
change in sendmail.cf and stopped and started sendmail (and even tried
a reboot) but the relay remains the old config. I've searched the web
and this newsgroup for anything similar but have had no luck resolving
the problem. Any assistance would be appreciated.
thank you,

Sun's sendmail is somewhat special, and it would help illuminate your
question if you were to post what it is you actually changed in
/etc/mail/sendmail.cf and how close to the 'standard' Sun sendmail
config your system is.
Note that in the default Sun config, the simplest way to change your
smarthost is external to the sendmail config, rather it is to point the
name 'mailhost' (possibly qualifed with your domain) to the IP of your
smarthost, either in /etc/hosts or DNS or in whatever other nameservice
your nsswitch.conf directs the system to use for the hosts database.
(Caveat: while I do a lot of work with Sendmail on Solaris, it has been
many years since I tried to do so based on what Sun provides and calls
Sendmail. Rather, I use Sendmail on Solaris by starting with the removal
of the SUNWsndm* packages and then installing a real Sendmail built from
the real source. )
