Drop down menu ends sometime after "W"

An extremely strange problem;
For some strange reason my database of contact names within filemaker, the
drop down surname list ends at "W" (Wi to be precise) even though we have
contact details all the way to "Z". We can still type the surname in the
search field and it return a result though.
Even stranger is that on the computer remotely connected to the filemaker
file, the dropdown menu shows all names, and it is the host computer having
the problem!
Both computers are running Windoze Vista.

Version of filemaker? Both patched to latest update?

Problem exists with computer running Filemaker 8.5 v2 (latest version) The
other is running filemaker 9 with no problems.

Hm. I wonder if its 8.5 or Vista or just the combination of the two.
I've seen earlier versions of FM do a few cosmetic oddities in Visa
now. Any chance you can try 8.5 from XP?

I recall having this problem also a couple of times. I'm running 8.5 on XP.
The problem also occurred on the serving side machine. In both cases I
re-indexed the offending field and all was okay. I don't know why this
occurred other than possible corruption of the index data. Also, the second
time this occurred I was able to the re-index from the remote end and all
was okay.

This is not unheard of. Re-indexing the field fixes it, as you
discovered.

It ma indicate some more general corruption. Save as a compacted copy
generally cures all kinds of corruption. Then you start using the
"cured" compacted copy as the production database.
