No MX records used - Needing to route to Google and localhost
No MX records used - Needing to route to Google and localhost

Hi everyone. I'm at your mercy here right now, as I've been scourging
the web trying to figure this one out. Quickly, this is the situation:
We're using Sendmail with Dovecot as our imap/pop interface and
Squirrelmail as our webmail client.
Domain: owl.english.purdue.edu
I've recently taken over as web administrator for our server, so I'm
still trying to get my bearings on what the previous webmaster has set
up. He unfortunately left VERY LITTLE information upon his departure
for our organization regarding the server.
I've ran checks on our domain, and it appears that we do not have any
MX records shown. I've dug through terminal and I see all of the
sendmail files, but regarding how to read them has been a bit of a
headache. Our email addresses show us using
'username@owl.english.purdue.edu', which leads me to believe that we
are using A names instead of MX records.
I'm needing to change our MX records (if they even exist) to the
following:
MX Server address Priority
ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 1
ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 5
ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 5
ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
While I want mail directed to google, can I also still have it
directed to our unix box, so until we do the full migration and finish
testing how this Google system works, we don't end up moving
everything at once? Basically I want mail sent to
'username@owl.english.purdue.edu' to be directed at both Google and
Localhost. Is this possible?
Also, any assistance at locating/creating/editing our MX record would
be greatly appreciate. I'm at your guys' mercy, as I'm definitely not
as good at Sendmail as you are. ANY assistance is greatly welcome!
Thanks everyone. Hope you're having a great week.

This actually has nothing to do wit Sendmail, its a DNS issue, talk to
whoever controls your zone file and get them to add whatever records you
want added.

Not easily, it cxould be done with a lot of tinkering, but I doubt it is
worth it, just set teh zone TTL in DNS to something short I think the
minimum is like 10 mins, your better off donig that until you move it all
then reset the TTL to a day, but again your DNS admin should know all
this.

Use the resources at your disposal to ask the people at your own network
what needs to be done to get your DNS configured properly to include MX
records for your subdomain.

It looks more like a project of one department that runs its own
independent mail system for its own people using its own subdomain. Very
common in academia. It results in things like English majors doing
system administration as work-study jobs...
