Filemaker questions.

Filemaker questions.

am 24.10.2007 14:03:04 von nashton

Hi all.

I've been using FMP since the first version when I paid a programmer to
adapt Filemaker to my needs. Said programmer had a motorcycle accident
and isn't available any longer. So I've been updating the files to run
on every iteration of Filemaker ever since and up until version 8.

I'm serving the database from home on a Pismo, of all things, and the
files are stored on an external Firewire drive (FW 800). The Pismo is
maxed out with RAM (1GB). f course, I use incremental backups on many
drives so I'm prepared for a catastrophe.

I've been hafving a difficult time getting a developer to clean up, so
to speak, the database for me because many things have just ceased to
work. At the end of the day, it works barely for my needs.

My questions are:
1. I am willing to spend the necessary money to get this thing running
fast and efficiently. Do I need to go all out and get an Xserve and what
do you recommend?
2. I am dealing with a filemaker developer as we speak, but things are
slow and I'm getting tired of waiting. If this deal falls through like
the one before (another developer got sick and couldn't do the job for
me), can anybody point me to a developer that could work for me to get
this thing fixed and adapted to me needs?
3. I am using a trial version of Daylite, which is great, but I would
like to have one point of data entry, i.e., Name, address, DOB etc in
filemaker that could be automatically synchronized with contacts in
Daylite. Anyone heard of such a solution?
4. I understand running the database on a laptop isn't the ideal
situation, but I've also tried it on a newer 24 inch, 2.8 GHz iMac with
4 GB of RAM and it's still slow across the internet with my static IP.
Could it be my 2-way satellite setup with high latency that's behind
this, or just the junk in the converted filemaker database that has been
carried from one iteration to the next?

Thank you for any of your help:)

1 & 4) Xserve sounds like overkill, especially if you've got a
satellite hookup. Also a Pismo is far from ideal. If you're
accessing remotely a lot, there are several hosting services out
there. Some of them, Point In Space comes to mind, offer a free 30
day trial I think. Throw your db up there and see if you like it.

2 & 3) There are lots of developers out there. You can start with the
FBA members on the Filemaker website. I also do development and would
be willing to take a look at your files and give you a rough estimate
for free (a detailed one I charge for), but I recommend you find 3
developers you like and choose between them. E-mail me at my G-mail
account: djefficiency.

Ehmm...I am curious, why just an indian developer for maintenance ?

By the way, I agree with all the other observations.

I think it was a joke since many US companies are "outsourcing" to
India these days. :o)
