trouble clicking from footer to body
trouble clicking from footer to body

I have a layout viewed in list mode. I have a header, a footer, and a
body. The summary info is in the body section with a button that
allows me to change the background color for the selected field.
It works fine, except when i view information in the footer. I have
tabs in the footer that allow me to see more info for the selected
record. When I change tabs then try to change the selected record in
the body section, the record changes to reflect it, but the highlight
button doesn't work. As a consequence, the field actually selected is
not the one that is highlighted.
I stripped out all of the tab orders in the layout, and this still
happens. After I get done tabbing, I have to double click on the
record to get the right one to highlight. After that, I must double
click every time.
Strangely enough, if I click somewhere randomly in the header, the
problem goes away. I go back to single clicking a record and the
highlight works the way it is supposed to.
I don't know if this is something I'm doing wrong, or a filemaker
nuance. Has anybody else experienced this? If so, how did you fix
it?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
I've taken some time to duplicate the list view set-up you describe. I
put the button to change the background colour in the body and also in
the tab. After editing data in the tab, I clicked the button. It
worked. This was regardless of whether button was on tab or in the
list body.
Maybe I'm not duplicating your set-up exactly. But here are some
pointers that may be of use to you:
- In list view, the current record/line is indicated by a 5 pixel wide
box to the left of the line. If you have the status area displayed, it
appears to the right of the status area otherwise it will be at the
far left of your screen.
Keep note of what the current record is throughout your navigation
around the list. See if it changes when you navigate between tabs.
- If you're still stuck, start with a totally blank FileMaker file.
Create a few fields and make a list layout with header, body and
footer. Make a button to simulate setting the background colour. This
can take you as little as 5 minutes.
If you're getting the same problem occurring you can email this test
file to me. If the problem is not occurring, you've got a basis upon
which to find the glitch. Ask yourself what you're doing that's
different between this quick and dirty test system and the one with
the problem.

I played with it again this morning. Oddly enough, if I click twice on
the tabs in the footer, the problem doesn't occur. It happens when I
single-click on a tab. If it single click on a tab and click randomly
on the screen, the highlight works fine. It is only when I single
click on a tab then try to change my record in the body section does
the record change (as evidenced by the 5px black bar on the left hand
side) without activating the button to change the highlight color.
I took your advice and made a dummy file, and the same problem
occured. You're more than welcome to look at the dummy file. Where
should I send it to?

Hi
It will be a pleasure to see how I can help. I've sent you my email
address off the list. Please send me the file.
To help me test the problem please tell me:
a) Which version of FileMaker you are running eg 8.03
b) Give me a step by step list of the actions I need to perform to
recreate the error eg 1. Got to this field, 2. go to this tab 3.
press this button etc
Thanks and regards

I agree, something unexpected is going on here. You have a script
button overlaying the whole of the body section. Once you have a tab
selected in the footer and click on the script button, then the
correct row is selected BUT the script is not run. If the script does
not run, you do not get the row highlighted. Urgh.
Is this a bug or a feature? I'll leave that to more experienced
members to judge.
I have confirmed your experience that it happens with FileMaker 9
Advanced and FileMaker 9. I did this testing on a Mac.
I did test the file in FileMaker 8 on a PC. The problem did not occur.
So maybe there are grounds for calling it a "bug" that creeped in with
FileMaker 9.
Now, how do you achieve your objective of highlighting a row while
still allowing users to view a tabbed object in the footer? I searched
out an entry on fmforums.com called "Highlight active row in list
view". It does what you want WITHOUT the need for a scripted button in
the body section. I've forwarded the demofile to you.
I do hope this technique meets your needs.
