Seeking Contacts Schema Recommendations

Although I've been fortunate enough to start with companies at a point
fairly early on in the database design process, I've had to work with
pre-existing tables and schemata for contacts. Part of my present
motivation is to try to make sure that the schema I use for contacts
can be converted easily into something similar to what would be found
in an Access 2007 template. I looked at some of the schemata for
contacts at one of Microsoft's web sites and found them to be a little
too loose and generic so I'm no longer overly concerned about that
aspect. I'm hoping to benefit from other's experiences that have
stood the test of time. I am looking for recommendations for a schema
that has worked well for contacts, without having too many fields, yet
one that will not need to be changed often. Has anyone achieved that
balancing act?
