Web Folder (WebDAV) Questions

Web Folder (WebDAV) Questions

I am just rediscovering WebDAV, after messing around with it some time last
year.

Is there anyway to let other users sign-in without them having a normal
Windows user account on the server? Which is the best way to do this?

Is there any way of giving the users different rights, so that some can only
read, and not write? Is that done through NTFS permissions?

It seems that Vista cannot open Web Folders without a Windows Update. Why
the hell did they do that??

Cheers

No. You are logging in as a user to an executable that manages the
communication with the file system in the web "sandbox". You have to have a
user account to use for that purpose. (It can be an admin account.) You
can't tack on a third party app easily to manage permissions for WebDav.

You CAN however use the FrontPage extensions management tool (Sharepoint) to
create users within the web, which creates a user group and confines the
user to a limited usage for the most part.

I don't undersand why this would be an issue.

Yes, or the tool "SharePoint Manager" also does that. (Basically using the
FrontPage extensions.)

Dunno. Lots of people don't like the way Vista operates. Join the club.

I just don't like having user accounts on the server, for people that would
never directly use it, with all the associated folders and registry files.
It seems messy to me, and it is the reason I stopped using the IIS FTP
server.

But I guess I might have to add some user acounts, as SharePoint is overkill
for me.

Thanks for you anwers.

Oh, another thing. I just noticed that the WebDAV Web Service Extension is
disabled in IIS, although I seem to be able to access the virtual WebDAV
folders remotely. What is going on here?
