I gather you are talking about the use of a device such as one shown here.

That being the case, these devices plug into the users computer either
through the USB or intercepting the keyboard wire. At that point, they are
essentially the same thing as a keyboard....simply an input device.
The barcodes that they read come in a number of "symbologies", most of which
are standard and the scanner simply translates the barcode into text.
