[OT] Mac Tiger Update
am 15.11.2007 11:21:22 von Matt Wills
A word of caution to OSX 10.4.x users:
Today's update to 10.4.11 may wipe out a bunch of preferences, including
your startup applications.
Any preference panes you have set to start on log in may also have to be
reset.

This is much more appropriate for comp.sys.mac.system than
comp.databases.filemaker.
If you decide to repost in a better place, it'd be a good idea to
include details or corroboration. I haven't seen such a report anywhere
else yet, and I have no idea (having *written* a couple of preference
panes for OS X) what your last sentence could possibly mean.

1. The properly and clearly identified OT post was a courtesy to
Mac/FileMaker users (there are a few of us out here, y'know) who don't
necessarily subscribe to that group, or who may see it here before they
see it anywhere else.
2. You've never seen an OT post anywhere? I have been a subscriber and
contributor to this group for years, and there have been plenty of posts
of varying "off-topicness" that weren't immediately leaped on for being
in other than what someone thought was the absolutely "proper" place,
especially if the information was of interest to a significant portion
of the "proper" target community. FYI: I'm not citing it as scientific
by any stretch, but a poll at BrianDunning.com says 71% of FileMaker
users (at least, those who visited Brian's site and voted), are
primarily Mac.
3. I require neither corroboration nor a previous report to know that it
happened to me, which is sufficient reason to disseminate the
information to others against the possibility I may help it not happen
to them. Just for grins, perhaps you could elaborate on how the first
person to report a problem might go about assembling corroboration
before he reports it?
4. The last sentence means exactly what it says. Regardless of your
experience or status as a Mac developer and regardless how perfectly
your product might perform, preference panes (e.g., Default Folder and
TypeIt4Me) which have ALWAYS been set to ON (10.4.10 and earlier) were
not on after the 10.4.11 restart, and my entire startup items list was gone.

Wouldn't it have been nice to do the courtesy to Mac users in general?
No such claims have been made on Macintouch, MacFixit, MacCentral or any
comp.sys.mac.* group so far.

Um. I'm not sure where that came from. I simply said, politely, that it
would have been more appropriate somewhere else. If you think you were
'immediately leaped on for being in other than what someone thought was
the absolutely "proper" place' frankly you should seek help for your
budding persecution complex. I just think it's a little strange that
someone would go out of their way to post a helpful message in a group
where it's not strictly on topic and completely ignore the groups where
the information would be of interest to 98% of the readers.

Well, you could have acknowledged where the information came from
(personal experience with no second data point) instead of just throwing
it out with no real information at all. I did say "_details_ or
corroboration," after all.
> 4. The last sentence means exactly what it says.
No. It doesn't. There's no meaningful interpretation of the implication
that a preference pane can be set to start on login, so no meaningful
interpretation of what it would mean to reset them.

It would also be more appropriate if it contained some facts. I've
updated two 10.4.10 systems with no ill effects.
Perhaps the OP could supply some additional detail about his failure to
update successfully.

I am not going to participate any further in a public p*ssing contest: I
have responded privately. Anyone wanting to stand around and watch can

Hey Matt.
Thanks for the info on Possible issues to the 10.4.11 update. I
passed this along to a long-time friend of mine... and when his
startup apps did not start up, it was no surprise and he knew what
most likely happened. Not sure what other issues he had, but he at
least knew there MAY be a problem(s) to watch out for.

Jesus Christ...
the originating poster just wanted to be helpful and the second poster
just said that maybe it'd be better off on the mac group...
WHO CARES?!?!
I'm glad someone thought about others and posted the Mac notice (and i
don't even use MAC)
I'm also glad that someone else made an attempt to keep the group
narrowed to FMP topics
the reply that someone with a MAC might see it here first is also
valid.
Everything after that is a big cry fest. NOW THAT STUFF IF OT!!
People helping people... come on guys... this is a GREAT GROUP.
