Copying data from one field to another

Copying data from one field to another

Please excuse my lack of knowledge of Filemaker Pro .... it is very
new to me.

I am trying to copy data from one table to another but I only want one
field to be copied.

The end result is that I want a reference list of all part numbers. I
have seperate tables indexed by part number. I want to copy all these
part numbers to the reference list in order to provide an index of
parts.

Is there a way simpy to copy items when in table view by column and
paste it to a column with the same name in another table?

Let's ask the question a different way, it might get you a more useful answer.

It seems that you have organized your data into different tables based
on part numbers. Now you want to view them all in one place.

It might be more useful to have ALL your parts in one table, and if
they need to be categorized by type or size or part number prefix or
whatever, use fields in the single table to organize them.

To do this, I would choose a single table as the master table. Create
the categorizing fields (such as TYPE) and then import each separate
table into the master. As you import each group of records, use the
Replace Contents command to fill in the categorizing field while the
imported records still form a found set.

Importing creates new records in the target table. Then you can delete
all those separate tables and you'll have organized your data properly.
You will be able to view and present the index of parts you want.

BTW, the copy a column paradigm above? That's a spreadsheet feature. FM
is not a spreadsheet.

Lynn

Thanks for your response, it sounds very logical. I will give it a try
today.

My background is developing systems in excel ... its very hard to get
away from the spreadsheet mentality :)
