Password Help with 8.5 Advanced
Password Help with 8.5 Advanced

I am currently using FMP 8.5 Advanced. Recently I went to open some files I
have going back to 1998 and up to 2002. I did these with a different
version of FMP but must have converted them to 8.5 a while back. I rarely
use these files but when I tried to open one recently, I was asked for a
password and my full name was there. I assume this is from when I installed
8.5 and entered my name. I know these earlier files were not password
protected. They once were protected but I am sure I removed the password
when I brought the files home and no longer needed them protected. I have
tried my username from work, the one I logged on with from 98 to 02 when I
used those files at work. I have tried all my usual passwords but so far I
have not had any luck. I read in another post to try admin with no password
but that did not work.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do or try next?
I am using Windows XP at home with FMP 8.5 Advanced.

Tried with both fields blank?

I just tried it with both fields blank and that did not work. "That
username and password can not be used to access this file." Bummer! I
think my mistake was getting the Advanced version. Clearly I need the
Complete Beginners version!!!
Thanks for your input.

Actually it's not "advanced" that is the problem. It is the change in
account name & password structure from FM 6 and earlier to FM 7 and
later.
Earlier versions just used passwords without account names, so when you
convert, you have to deal with that.
BY default, a new database in FM 7 & later has an Admin account name and
no password.
You do have to know the password for the old file, if it had one.
When you convert, make the Account Name blank, and put in the old
password. If there was no old password, leave both the account name and
password blank.

An oddity I encountered when converting a password protected database
from FM Pro 6 to 7: it created a new account which had the account name
and password both equal to the old master password!
(This exposed the password, and makes me worried about how securely
passwords are stored in FileMaker Pro 6 and earlier, despite FileMaker's
claims that they are much more secure in version 5 and later than in
versions 3 and 4.)
Try entering the old password in both the username and password fields.

I don't see a connection here. Have you tried asking FM support?

Others' suggestions should work (both blank; admin and blank; both equal
to the old password). Since they don't work for you, have you tried
going back to the original files (FM6 or earlier) to see whether or not
a password was required and, if so, then which password?

I just looked through the last few posts and tried them all. One did
work!!!! I removed the username and just used one of my old passwords and
it opened right up.
Thanks to all who responded. I was afraid I would not get any help because
I would be perceived as someone trying to hack into some files that were not
his. But apparently I was not the first person to have this problem.
Again, thanks to everyone.
