Enforce password at startup not working

Enforce password at startup not working

am 25.11.2007 20:33:01 von clk

FMP 8.0v3 Adv on Mac OS 10.4: I set automatic login as guest and use the
Alt key to get the password window. Works with all my files.

Now a guy sends me a file he's been working with FMP 8.5v1 on a Mac. It
has the same setting, but the Alt key has no effect. Tried different
keys and combinations, nothing works. Finally moved the file to a
Winblows XP machine and used the shift key and remove the automatic
login.

Back on the Mac, I get full access now. However, again no chance to get
the password window as soon as I put the automatic login in. Still no
problem with my files. The creepy part is that the file in question was
created by me on my very Mac. The guy with the FMP 8.5 just used it and
added a table.

One more of Filemaker's way telling us we better move to Windows?

Maybe the file got corrupted somehow.

Compacting the file can cure various kinds of corruption. Try saving as
a compacted copy, then open up the compacted file and see if it still
has this odd behavior.

Compacting does not cure anything. It just does what it says. It compacts a
file by removing empty spaceblocs and rebuilding indexes, etc. On the same
token recovering does not cure anything. this is only meant as a temporary
measure to (re)gain access to a damaged file. All contents should be
transported to a fresh clone as soon as possible. (Not a clone that has just
been made, but a clone that has been saved at developing time and has not
been used). It may seem troubles are cured after compact/recover, but really
you can't rely on it and troubles may (and probably will) be lurking
somewhere.

Keep well, Ursus

I agree with Ursus about the general practice. However, compacting can
help some kinds of trouble. It is not the ideal solution; the ideal
solution is just what Ursus said. However, if a known good clone is not
available . . . . . .

Agreed, but it miraculously cured this one?!

It seems it might have done, or it might have left some traces now lurking,
waiting to spring out again. I wouldn't rely on it anyway.

Compacting does, as you say, rebuild indexes, which can cure some
issues. And I mean cure. There should be no hesitation in using a
compacted file. Recovered is another story.
