At a loss with date entry in FMPA 9 / XP
At a loss with date entry in FMPA 9 / XP

FMPA 902, Dutch Win XP
Dear Listeners:
Date fields turn out to be almost totally unusable in the above combination:
a)
Date field with format set to "Leave format as entered".
Windows config settings to dd-mm-yyyy (= Dutch) (the separator cannot be
changed there)
Date separator in FMP settings of that field: "/" or "-" or "."
Data entry with the pop-up calender => field becomes black as long as the
calendar is open and shows "23-12-2003".
AFTER I have clicked on the wanted calendar date, the date is shown as
"23.12.2003" in the field +
=>> error:
"The value of this field must be a valid date in the range of years 1 to
4000
and should look like "25/12/2003". Revert..."
So I can only use Revert (= blank).
b)
As in a) but date field format set to "Format as "23/12/2003" and
various delimiters used/tried:
Same error
c)
As in a) but "Custom date format" with/without leading zeroes, and
irrespective of
the delimiter (by the way, there is no "-" there, only a very long/ugly
dash) and irrespective of the "Display as" setting (Half width etc.,
whatever that may mean):
Same error
d) The *only* way to enter a date turns out to be *manually* and the *only*
accepted
entry format is "23-12-2003".
The display format remains independent of the entry format. Entering
"23-12-2003" can be made to show as one of the various settable formats.
This looks like a serious bug in the calendar pop-up. That calender is so
very handy - date fields are so
frequent after all - but it cannot be used and the date *must* be entered
manually and only
with dashes.
By the way, no validation is performed on the date field described above,
therefore the error message is not caused by a faulty validation
Anybody knowing a solution?

Same set-up here. FMPA 9 dutch on XP
Recreated your setup, found no problems
If you want I could send a fresh copy of the sample I made.
Keep well, Ursus

Hello Ursus:
Hm, very strange. I shut down my pc yesterday, fired it up just now, created
a fresh test date field - and the pop-up calender works just fine. Have no
idea why. I'll keep your offer of a model file in my mind though, thank you!

Hello Ursus,
The problem has surfaced again grrrrr. It happens in a file converted from
FMP 604.
I thought at first it might be caused by validation options, so I removed
those, alas, to
no avail.
Then I created a "blank" new date field in that converted file, without any
validation - same problem. It is perfectly possible to enter a date as
23-12-2003 in that field (no other delimiters are possible) but there is no
way to use the calendar.
It seems even not possible to set a date from a calc field (type "date")
from a another table/file with the formula: Date( n.month ; n.day ;
n.year ).
I then created a totally new file in FMP 902, created a date field and added
the calendar. That worked fine, even after rebooting the pc (just to make
sure).
It even gets more bizarre:
When I set the date field with a script from another file (using the calc
field above), I get
00-00-0000 as a visible date when the date format is set to "Format as
23-12-2003".
When you click on that field, it can be seen that the scripted value had
been filled in but no change is possible.
When the date format is "Leave date formatted as entered", it shows up as
"23.12.2003". But it cannot be edited by hand then.
It can only be edited if I use "Leave date formatted as entered" and
*subsequently manually* change the two full stops [.] into two dashes [-].
It seems that only converted files do have this problem. If this is indeed
the case, it's a very serious bug. I have e.g. a large solution I need to
convert one of these days, and it contains maybe 50 date fields, all of
which are settable by various types of quite peculiar but nifty calendars I
built
myself in FMP 6. Even those custom calendars do
not work anymore in converted files. Certainly many other folks will have to
do some conversions every now and then, I wonder how they will fare.

Hello Ursus.
Have been playing around with it some more, probleem seems to be gone
(hopefully not for the moment), still can't find any reason for the varying
behaviour.

I have read all your posts and am none the wiser too. Hopefully you have
cracked it now.
Keep well, Ursus
