Refreshing Graphics in vb.net

I am new to vb.net and have been used to using the Autoredraw property in VB6
to refresh the graphics. I've made various attempts to save and restore
graphics but so far have had no success. I'm only drawing a few ellipises and
rectangles. Can you give any guidance please, either code or a book which may
help.
