Can FMP 8 Open Remote-ly, files from a previous version (6), or do
they need to all be upgraded?
Can FMP 6 Open Remote files hosted by an FMP 8 client, if it was an
fp5 file?
These don't seem to be answered in the user guide, or I'm missing
them. Thanks

6 to 7 was a new file-type. And major changes happened. 6 cannot be opened
or read by 7 and up. It can be easily converted to 7 and up and then of
course you can work with them.
But then we come to the second question
Downwards is not to be recommended. 9 can be opened with 8 and 7, but you
will probably mis some functionality, or perhaps even a lot of
functionality. 7 cannot be opened downward because of the complete rework
that happened between 6 and 7. Once an old file has been converted to 7 or
up there is no way back, except a complete rebuild.
Keep well, Ursus
