OT: assigned programmes for PHP files?

am 06.12.2007 13:25:14 von jodleren

Hi

Just plain interest. PHP files are not default assigned to any
programme in Windows, so one can use whatever one wants to use.
I have used notepad, but changed to IE (or any browser), based on the
idea, that I can still see a lot of how that page will look like -
after all a large part of it is HTML.
Also, when opening pages this way, I immidiately get an idea of what
it is.
I use Delphi as an editor.

What programme do you open php files with?
What icon do you use for php files?

Merry Christmas
Sonnich

Hi Sonnich,

Do yourself a favor and get a better editor. :P
Once you have seen full-color code highlighting and code completion, you
don't want to use notepad again.

I use Zend Development Environment at the moment.
It is not free, and I have mixed feelings about it.

However, you can use a lot of good free ones too.
I used Eclipse earlier (PHP Eclipse), which was quite good.

Here are a bunch with reviews:
http://www.phpeditors.com/review/

which is a good point to start your quest for a good editor.

But I must warn you: It is very difficult to know beforehand which
editor you like.
Best is to download them, use them in a project, and if you don't feel
satisfied simply try another.

Personally I hate reading 5000 pages before I know how an editor works,
so I always look for simplier editors because they tend to be more
intiutive in use.

I think PHP Eclipse might be a good choice, but you need a high-end
computer because the framework (Eclipse) is quite heavy on your CPU.
It can do a lot, but is also a little harder to master than, say, PHP
Designer 2005 to name another simple good one.

Good luck!

Regards,
Erwin Moller

PS: Don't be shy and post your findings here. Some in here, like me,
like to hear how a certain editor behaved and what you liked about it
and what not. Reviews are always welcome. :-)

I'm using Edit Pad Pro for my PHP files (and most other text files, for
that matter, replacing Notepad as my standard text editor), and for
..php files, I've let Windows XP assign an default icon for them
(showing a "blank" page containing the Edit Pad Pro program icon).

And yes, I started out with their "Lite" version. I simply felt so
comfortable with it that I upgraded to the Pro version.

Well i used PhpEclipse for some time but changed to the PDT. PDT is
nearly as comfortable as the Zend Development Studio but with the
advantage of using Eclipse supporting other programmming languages and
file types and having a bunch of developer tool plugins available.

Not sure what PHP files open with by default... "Screem" it seems but I
rarely use Screem. 99% of the time, I launch the file from the command
line, not my file manager, so I just type in the name of the editor I want
to use -- generally nano, nedit or SciTE.

I use the GNOME Tango icon set, which comes with icons for pretty much any
common file type, including PHP. Here's the PHP one:
