IIS is so broken, I"m going to lose my mind

IIS is so broken, I"m going to lose my mind

am 31.12.2007 19:20:00 von Julian

I am running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 64-bit Service
Pack 2.

I cannot reinstall IIS, I mean, it works (the install) but the IIS
Admin service does not start. Oddly, if I go into the inetsrv folder,
no metabase.xml is generated for me.

Even more oddly, if I try to run iisrstas.exe from the command line in
system32\inetsrv the file does not exist, or even if i do dir *IIS*
the file does not exist but in windows explorer it does exist (in the
same folder).

This problem all started when I installed Microsoft Exchange Server
2007 SP1. The upgrade puked at some point, about some class it could
not register and bam my entire system was trashed.

I have installed, reinstalled, punched my computer, reinstalled again
and still nothing has changed.

An OS install is not possible as this is a production machine.

Needless to say, your help is appreciate on this last day of the year.

If it is really critical, you may want to get in touch with MS Support.

I would prefer not to sit on the phone for 4 hours with PSS to try and
bang my head against the wall in unison with some guy at Microsoft.
There is probably someone out there who has had this problem
somewhere!

maybe, but since it is New Year's eve and most folks may not check the forum
until the 2nd and you mentioned that it was a Production box. We'll then
wait to see if someone has a solution. Hope you get this resolved and a
Happy New Year to you.

Can you revert to a pre-install backup?

If not, I would strongly suggest you call Microsoft PSS (since you mention
that this is production). Whilst it might be four hours on the phone, you're
going to spend a lot more hours waiting for replies here. At least PSS can
have you run their msreports tools to gather up all the relevant information
about the state of your machine to then try to diagnose where the error is.
Here, we'd be asking you 101 questions before we might even get down to
nailing the issue.

For example, you mention that IISAdmin doesn't start. What error do you get
when you try to start it? That type of info is missing from your post. You
mention that you got "some error" installing a service pack. Do you have
that error message handy? Do you have the SP installation logs etc. All of
that is missing, and we'd just be spending time asking you for it, until we
run into something we've seen before and can advise. PSS is the quicker
route.

Cheers
Ken

If you want a guaranteed, responsible answer (such as for production
machines), then I recommend Microsoft PSS.

Otherwise, you are really at the mercy of finding the proverbial
needle in the haystack of someone having had this same, unusual
problem, actually taking time to resolve it, has time, and willing to
help. That's really going to take longer than 4 hours here, and it's
not intentional malice. It's just how different support channels work
-- cost, quality of support, timeliness, and responsibility are all
different.

Personally, I think you opened a 32bit command shell (like "command")
on 64bit Windows. 64bit applications like Windows Explorer see
everything. 32bit applications will not see (for compatibility
reasons) the real %windir%\System32\inetsrv but rather %windir%
\Syswow64\inetsrv, in which you won't find metabase.xml nor *IIS* in
that directory since not all 32bit versions of IIS binaries exist in
Syswow64. If this is the case, then all your observations are
basically not useful.

And have you checked out the Microsoft.public.Exchange.Setup
newsgroup, since it is setup that failed?

And if you think that IIS is corrupted, then you probably have no
choice but to reinstall the OS. I do not know of anyone that will walk
you through such a manual rebuild.
