Freeware PHP Windows Editors
Freeware PHP Windows Editors
am 06.01.2008 20:40:29 von 1001 Webs
Hi there,
I am starting to make more advanced PHP coding and I'm planning to
make a transition from Notepad++ to a full-featured PHP editor.
I would like it to be freeware unless there is a very compelling
reason to make me part with my money.
So far, I've seen these options available:
Maguma Studio Free
PHP Editor by EngInSite
PHP Eclipse
SciTE
EngInSite Editor for PHP
Pidela
PHP Side
TruStudio
PHPMaker
Smultron
HAPedit
PHP Coder
Could you recommend any of them , or perhaps another one?
Thanks

On Windows I used Dreamweaver and loved it. It doesn't have a debugger
and I do not think one is available, but so far that has been my
favorite. Under Ubuntu, I'm using Netbeans with the PHP plugin and
while I like it, I'm still not sold. As for the ones you listed, I
can't tell you one way or another.

Eclipse PHP and it has everything what I need. The same tool for
Windows, Linux, Mac. Many many plugins... and many, many features
(CVS, SVN, Trac, DBEditor, XDebug, ...).
It is really useful editor if you work with such framework as "Symfony
Framework".

I downloaded Aptana because I understood it came with a PHP debugger,
but I can't find it anywhere.
I can't even find the PHP editor.

Judging by their website, it seems like you need to install the PHP
plugin for Aptana:

You might prefer Notepad++ -- which is BASED on SciTE but has
more features (SciTE itself is primarily the editing libraries with their
editor being more of a demo of what SciTE can do than being intended
as a primary editor.)
Notepad++ for light work, and PHP Eclipse or the PDT Eclipse for
serious work seems to be the way to go.

Yes right, I have received an e-mail from them as well indicating
that:
"Aptana Studio does not include a PHP debugger, although we hope to
implement PHP debugging in the future.
To install the PHP editor plug-in, go to the Aptana Start Page (Help >
Aptana Start Page...), and under the "Languages" column, scroll down
to "PHP", then follow the instructions to download and install from
there."
=46rom my point of view a debugger will add a lot of value to the
product, which otherwise is fairly good.

I was going to download it, but then I realized that the beast is
about 100 Mb compressed, which would yield to up to 200+ once it is
installed.
Anyway, I found a very good one called phpDesigner:
http://www.mpsoftware.dk/phpdesigner.php
Only functional for 14 days unless you buy it though.
(but I just realized that I have an old beta that works fine ..., he,
he, he, ...)

I use Notepad++ a lot, but it has a major bug when doing search &
replace on long strings,
it can make a real mess of the whole of your site

The question I have is which of these editors do syntax hilighting for
both PHP and {X}HTML in the same document?
I've already downloaded and tried a few of these already but none of
them seem to have this capability.

Seconded. And if you ever move up to programming php on a Linux
server, vim is usually available there too, so you'll already be
familiar with it.

I just purchased a copy of PhpEd from NuSphere.
http://www.nusphere.com/products/php_ide_major_features.htm
http://www.nusphere.com/products/phped_verscomp.htm
After trying several PHP IDEs, this is the only one that worked out of
the box. No additional downloads, no extra configuration of ini files,
works with my crazy setup.
The only configuration that I needed to set was which PhpEd web server
I wanted to use when debugging the code.

If you just want syntax hilighting for both PHP and {X}HTML, etc. then
you can use Notepad++, which will highlight and color the code as long
as it is properly closed, i.e. tags closed, semicolons, etc.
If it isn't then it treats the code as plain text with no highlighting
at all, which gives you a warning that something is wrong, kind of a
debugger.

Well I like PHP Eclipse OK, I find that it's intellisense autocomplete
is actually pretty dumb, and it's code folding is constantly
misaligned or mis-folds. Thot I'd toss in my 2 cents since I'm
looking at trying a different one myself, which is why I'm reading
this thread.

Thanks for that, but I have already purchased phpDesigner and I am not
sorry I did. This is one kick-a** application!

Given that I do very little of my development on Windows -- it's normally
just Windows-specific changes to scripts I've written on Linux or Mac --
I'm perfectly happy with a simple editor that has syntax highlighting and
code folding support. SciTE fits the bill quite nicely.

Absolutely agree.
To me it is the best of the lot, although it could be that I see it
that way cause I'm not much of an expert, but it makes it very easy to
get hold of PHP and saves you many frustrations.

My only gripe with it (and it's a minor one) is the documentation is a
bit lacking. There are _a lot_ of options (configuration and such) and
I have to play around with it to 'discover' the behavior. I've also
emailed the company and have received timely replies.
Dan
btw, I notice that this was posted to multiple groups. Isn't the
comp.lang.php group the defacto one for all things PHP ?
What are the purposes of the other groups, if it's ok to ask here?

Created by people too lazy to have found comp.lang.php I assume.
