SBS 2003 IIS mail Logs.

SBS 2003 IIS mail Logs.

am 08.01.2008 18:18:01 von Kris

Hi,

Can someone please advise how I configure/check IIS mail logs in SBS 20003.
I would like to use the logs to determine if emails have been received by a
recipient.

Many thanks.

I have enabled logging on the Default SMTP connector. Can anyone recommend
which logging options are most usefull?

Thanks

Hi Kris,

I check all the logging options, you will find most of the information
helpful in trying to track down mail issues. It's good to have all of the
information available just in case you need it, and you can only see what
you need to through some logparser queries.

Thanks for the advice Rick. I had disabled some of the options yesterday and
when I checked the logs thismorning whilst investigating a problem I had
removed the ones I needed!

I cannot see any logs for outbound mail?

Our mail goes through a smarthost which filters for spam and viruses. Due
to this the logs incoming logs display the mail as coming from the smarthost
ip address. I believe this will mean the outbound logs will only display the
mail as being delivered to the smarthost server and not the ultimate
destination.

Is there anyway of tracking an email to a users inbox as we have a recipient
who is denying they have received an email with an attachment. Our smarthost
has provided me with logs showing the mail being delivered to thier servers?

Thanks,

Chris

HI Kris,

As you know, when you use a smarthost, the local server's SMTP logs will
only show the delivery to the smarthost, you have to look in the smarthost's
SMTP logs to get more information.

SMTP really only cares about delivering to the mail server that it gets from
DNS information, so that's all your logs will ever show. If you want
specifics on the delivery to inboxes on the other end, you will need to
contact the people who manage the remote mail server and have them look
through the logs.
