Webdav for iCal Sharing
am 10.01.2008 13:21:17 von Oli Watts
Hi,
Quick question to the group. I'm responsible for sysadmin-ing a
Windows 2000 box which runs Filemaker Server and IIS.
I want to create a WebDAV section on IIS that will allow our Mac OS X
network to publish and subscribe to calendars via iCal.
I have correctly created a WebDAV site in IIS (which I can connect to)
but iCal in Mac OS X requires authentication.
My question:
How do I go about setting a username and password for connection to
the WebDAV site? My knowledge of IIS is very low, and would appreciate
any pointers anyone can offer.
As an aside, does anyone in the group have any experience of running
CalDAV (http://ietf.osafoundation.org/caldav/index.html) under Apache
on Windows 2000?
Many thanks,
Oli

Question:
Do you actually want good calendaring for your network, or just
something to putter along to appear that you have calendaring?
Because if you just want to putter along, why not use the iCal Server
in Mac OS X Server for your Mac users?
And if you don't want to putter along, then how about using Exchange
and let the Mac users run Entourage.
But please don't putter along half-way where you don't purchase
solutions that work and ask other people to assemble free solutions
for you. That's not remotely fair.
Calendaring is not something easy that you want to cheap-out on.

David,
I'm not asking for anyone to assemble a free solution for me, that's
my job in a start up business. All I am asking is how to fix the
authentication on our WebDAV IIS share so I can connect to it
correctly.
Thanks for any input.

I see.
Well, there are many types of authentication that can be configured
for HTTP and WebDAV, so you'll need to figure out which is actually
required/supported by your iCal clients.
You will have to open up the IIS Manager UI, locate that WebDAV site,
right-click Property, choose the "Directory Security" tab, click the
first button on top to choose authentication protocols, and then
select the ones you need.
Then you will need to create users and passwords in Windows. IIS will
use them for authentication.
Good luck.
