Multi user opinion

I have a business with one partner. I am looking to consolidate our
database onto 1 Power Mac using FM pro 8.5. Is it a bad idea to use
the server computer for things other than being the FM database. What
are the downsides to working on the server computer while it performs
the server task. Any opinions welcome.

You can not change your file while it is open for sharing, the user wouldn't
see the updates until the file was closed and opened again. But it is always
a good idea to work on a fresh, empty copy of the last template you have
saved. I hope you do have an empty copy of the file from the point when it
first started. This is good development practice. In case anything goes
wrong. You develop on your empty file, shutdown the server file, keep een
empty copy of it, import the data from the file on the server and replace
the file.

You might cheat if you only need one tiny bit changed. But I wouldn't
recommend it. I know most people don't even bother making clones and copies,
but that is just waiting for dissaster to happen. (what if your file crashed
and the fault also appears in your backup?)

Keep well, Ursus

It will work. The downsides are

-It may slow the host computer down for client database operations;

-If the host computer is set up to allow file sharing via the operating
system, you could get the database into serious trouble if someone opens
it by way of OS file sharing, rather than by way of FileMaker sharing.
So you should avoid setting up OS file sharing on the host computer.
