Hi !
I'm a total newbie to PHP. I was wondering if it is necessary that my
project files be physically present within the www directory ?
( In .net there was a way to put the files elsewhere and just point
the server to them)

There is no such thing as "project files" in PHP. Your editor may use
them, but that has nothing to do with PHP itself.

That depends on the web server, not on the scripting language.
