ODBC driver installation

ODBC driver installation

am 25.01.2008 13:13:43 von insomniux

Hi,
I need to install an ODBC driver for a database, but our system-
administrator does not allow me to install it on the VPN-server. Is
there a way to install an ODBC driver for a separate user. The client
using the driver is an ms-access database. The server is windows 2000
Thanks
Insomniux

You install the driver on the client's (user's) PC.

Of course, but when I;m working on this VPN server, it is the client,
to which I am remotely connected. It is no use to install the driver
on my home pc....

If you are connected to a client machine, that machine is the one that
requires the ODBC driver. That's what I meant by the client machine -
that machine is a client of the DB, not of your machine.

I'm sorry to interrupt this part of the thread. Lets focus on the
question if it is possible to install an ODBC driver for one user, in
the case the user has no administrative rights on the machine (be it
the client, the server, or server which acts as client).

I'm not sure if the following will work w/o an ODBC driver on the
client's machine: Use a DSN-less string in the db connection property.
You can find examples of DSN-less connection strings here:

http://www.connectionstrings.com/

But, I believe an ODBC driver needs to be on the user's PC for this to
work. Get the system admins to install the necessary driver on the
users' PCs... I mean, why the heck won't they allow the user to complete
their jobs?! Sheesh, that's their (sysadms) job.
