Well, a rewrite can be a redirect if you use the [R]
modifier, but not all rewrites are redirects.
There are many examples in the history of
alt.apache.configuration, and the documentation on
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/rewrite/rewrite_guide.html
and
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/rewrite/rewrite_guide_advan ced.html
might give you an idea what rewrites can do for you.
