Centos is really easy to setup, it's the OSS equivalent to Red Hat
Enterprise Server, and is just a week behind on security updates from
RH (a good thing). But being it's own distro it does not get the
latest and greatest stuff right away.

But if you want to try more modern stuff, I am serving with Ubuntu
now, also pretty easy but way more popular support, though Centos had
some nicer Samba admin tools.

I would say that almost every distribution will do this.

html files aren't parsed as php, you need to name the file something.php

Maybe it was for you provided too little information, I guess you are one of
those people calling a car engineer and saying, "The car don't start, what's
wrong?".

By the way, Fedora 5 is quite old, I do suggest you go with a more up to date
version, as Fedora 8, as I doubt you would install microsoft 95 when you make
a fresh microsoft install on a new computer.

which linux distro? tried fedora 5.

what i'm looking for is a distro which has apache server, php and mysql on
it in which php just works properly from installing the distro and thus the
packages which come with it. . fedora 5 was supposed to let me use php
straight away, that is, run php scipts (phpinfo()) from html. i got an error
when i ran php, worked fine as a command line - all the info just came out
but nothing from running a page.

i asked at the forums "it's supposed to run and recognise php straight away"
was about the only advice and that was it. crickets.

For something like 98% of all distributions comes with apache/mysql/php, it's
just slimed down distributions that do not include it.

The information you gave here was quite little, not really useful to figure
out anything.

You got a reply on which distributions you could use, without naming anyone
specifically and an explanation what may have gone wrong with your initial
install based on the amount information you gave, so if you don't like the
answer just ignore it.

You're getting useless answers because you have useless questions.

YOU'RE THE ONE ASKING FOR HELP, not J.O. And now I understand why you
have to ask in so many groups. With an attitude like that, you won't
get any more help here, either.

Learn how to ask intelligent questions. Don't argue with those more
knowledgeable than you about what you're asking questions on.

And don't criticize those trying to help you.

Explain exactly how you tried to invoke phpinfo() from "running a page"
(whatever that means).

Look for lines like this in your http config file or a config file that
it includes (probably in /etc/apache):

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php4
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php5
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php

Might be commented out.

You can also put the directive in a .htaccess file

Those links are for apache 2.0. If not yours, go

I strongly suggest you try a RECENT distro. Are you aware that the current
Fedora is 8!

I have had zero problems running apache, php, mysql on any current distro.
Mostly, I now use Ubuntu - I have found debian package management more
suitable than rpm.

'slimed' or 'slimmed'? I like to think that it is only MS that is 'slimy'.

Ain't it quite slimy to just offer a small portion of the GNU/OSS world? ;)

it shoudl have been slimmed.

Nearly all distributions do... Fedora 5 included.
