One of the problems I face in sending information to a cell phone is
that there seems to be no standard way of interfacing with all brands
of cell phones. I looked briefly into tagged PDF, which can hint to
the display device ways to summarize and display the contents, but
decided against using it. It seems that each manufacturer/service has
their own SDK for interfacing with phone software. A simple text
message is easier. Many cellular service providers, such as Verizon,
provide a domain that allows email text messages to be sent to
directly to their customers. There is a movement to unify the SDK's
into one method for interacting with all cell phones, but as of yet I
cannot determine what that method will be. Microsoft is also doing
something in an attempt to unify things. Obviously iPhone's and PDA's
aren't as restricted as typical cell phones. Please post back if you
discover anything interesting related to your challenge.

Technician: You should turn off your cellphone, remove the battery for
20 seconds, then reboot it at least once per week.

Me: It must be running code from Microsoft :-).

In this case we've been storing the cell phone vendor name along with the cell phone
number to do exactly this. However we're also dealing with a limited group of
motivated individuals.

There are SMS vendors out there from which you can purchase the capability of sending
text messages to phones. Steve Schapel, although living in New Zealand chose a vendor
in South Africa.
